Farewell

Farewell, Leonard Nimoy.

One summer, I spent a multi-day car trip learning to raise my eyebrows independently of each other just so I could raise one like Spock.  I geeked out when I learned Leonard Nimoy was in an episode of my absolute favorite show, Combat!  My brother and I spent so many hours pretending we were Spock and Kirk that the name "Spock" conjures up my brother's face about as often as Nimoy's.

Although I fangirled over Captain Kirk as an adolescent, I now appreciate Mr. Spock's calmness and wisdom in ways I never could then.  I plan to cancel my previous choice for our Friday night movie and watch a couple of my favorite Star Trek eps instead.  I'm thinking "Journey to Babel" and maybe "City on the Edge of Forever."  Or possibly the Combat! episode he guests in, "The Wounded Don't Cry."

  1. Such sad news today. :( Spock has always been part of my life. There're no memories where Star Trek was not there. I was thinking of watching a couple of my favorite episodes tonight as well.

He was in two C! eps. He was also in "The Raider," but I don't think you've watched the latter yet.

    1. Nope, haven't seen that one yet. But... perhaps today should be the day I do. We'll see.

I can vividly remember how we first got into Star Trek, and it was entirely because of Spock. My dad was watching one of the movies because he was laid up with the flu, and we happened to watch a teensy part of it. My brother was captivated with Spock and asked if we could watch more, so we got some eps out of the library, and there was no turning back.

  2. I 'know' Leonard Nimoy only from Combat! and Get Smart (I believe he guested in one of the Season 1 episodes), although Mom has said that if I and my siblings were so inclined, we could start watching Star Trek. Anyway, even if I don't feel the connection to him that all the major Star Trek fans do, it's always sad when a well-known person (or anyone, for that matter) passes on.

    1. When I was a teen, Star Trek and Combat! vied for my affections, and I generally couldn't decide which I liked better. If you can imagine! Over the years, my love for C! overtook Trek, but it's still in my top ten. I suppose compared to modern shows it's cheesy and corny, but viewed by someone who loves old TV, it holds up well.

    2. My siblings + Mom were discussing Leonard Nimoy at breakfast yesterday morning, and I realized I'd forgotten to mention that I've seen him in M:I too - all of Season 4, in fact. When I was younger, we owned just that season, and we watched the different episodes until the discs were literally ruined. It was odd to watch earlier episodes from other seasons, because his character, Paris, wasn't in them.

    3. I'm simply going to have to find time to watch some eps of M:I, aren't I :-)

  3. I cried so hard over this last night. It feels like part of my soul has died.

Though I knew Spock as a pop culture icon, my first true introduction to Nimoy was as Dr. Bell in "Fringe." I so enjoyed his character that I started watching Star Trek, and in no time at all, the super-logical, pointy eared ... well, you know the rest of the quote ... wormed his way into my heart.

    Farewell, old friend.

    1. I've spent a large chunk of yesterday and today letting myself soak in my memories of Spock. And I watched "Journey to Babel" and "Court Martial" last night in Nimoy's honor.

  4. My introduction to Leonard Nimoy was,of course, on "Star Trek", but he also played a character on "Mission: Impossible for a couple of years, if you've ever seen that classic show.

    1. I have only seen maybe 2 or 3 eps of the original M:I, but none of them featured Nimoy. Hmm. I see that some episodes are available at CBS.com, so perhaps I'll try to find one he's in.

  5. Popping in late, but I had a family emergency when this happened.

I was able to watch my favorite Trek episode, though, to honor Nimoy: "Balance of Terror." Great acting by Nimoy and also by Mark Lenard.

    1. "Balance of Terror" is one of the best! I don't have that one, or it may have been my other choice to watch, besides "Journey to Babel."
