Monday Movie Quote Link Up 3

My quote this week comes from Tom Elder (Dean Martin) in The Sons of Katie Elder (1965).  Mary Gordon (Martha Hyer) brought over some food for the four brothers.  After she leaves, he says, "I'll bet she's a good cook, too!"  He takes one bite of a chicken leg, pulls a face, throws the rest of the leg back in the basket, and says:

"I'm glad I didn't bet -- I'd've lost."

I don't think they mind she's not a good cook, do you?
I say that relatively often, though I quote a lot of other lines from this too.

The Sons of Katie Elder (1965) my third-favorite movie of all time, and my favorite John Wayne movie.  Not to mention my favorite western.  In it, John (John Wayne), Tom (Dean Martin), Matt (Earl Holliman), and Bud (Michael Anderson Jr.) Elder come back to their home town for their mother's funeral.  Their father died  earlier, which they don't seem to have cared about at the time, but now they suspect there was some skulduggery involved in his death, as he lost his ranch in a poker game the same night.  So they set out to find out who was behind both events.

There are several light-hearted moments throughout the movie, like the one above where the brothers reminisce about boyish escapades.  But there's plenty of excitement too, including a couple of shoot-outs.  Also, this is a really clean movie, only one foul word in it, which is sadly rare in westerns from the sixties.

    I haven't seen this one. But it definitely sounds funny. And such a great cast! Of course it helps that the brothers are pretty nice to look at. ;) Plus John Wayne! Can't go wrong there.

      Oh, Kara, try to find this one! It's not funny overall, though it has a couple scenes that used to make my brother and I roll around with laughter. But it's just a delicious movie (and yes, the yummy cast helps!).

    My favorite movie quote is from "The Best Years of Our Lives." When daughter Teresa Wright tells mom Myrna Loy and dad Fredric March that they've never had any trouble, that everything has always been so perfect for them, Myrna comes back with one of the most wisdom-filled lines I have ever heard...

    (Looking at husband Fredric March) "We never had any trouble? How many times have I said I hated you and believed it in my heart? How many times have you said you were sick and tired of me, that we were all washed up? How many times have we had to fall in love all over again?"

      BYOOL has so many good lines, doesn't it? I love that scene -- those two are such an amazing, realistic couple. The first time I saw BYOOL, I'd picked it up from the library just because Myrna Loy is in it, and ended up falling in love with Dana Andrews. Before that, I'd just thought of Dana as "that guy from State Fair with the Dick Tracy hair," hee. I'm actually hoping to watch it again soon, to review for the Period Drama Challenge.
