"How to Train Your Dragon" (2010)

It took me eight years to finally see this, but now I've seen it three times in a little over a week.  Because I LOVE IT!!!  Everyone has been telling me to that I would, and so I finally borrowed it from a friend and watched it.  And then watched it again with my kids.  And then took my kids to see it on the big screen today because it was playing as part of a local theater's summer kids movie series thing.  And then bought our own copy on DVD.  Because yeah, my kids love it too.

They think it's weird, though, that I cry during it.  And I cry quite a bit, in four main spots.  Like, have-to-blow-my-nose kind of crying, not just tearing up a little.  Because wow, parents and kids not understanding each other, and then learning to understand each other?  That always hits me.  And people proving themselves when everyone has told them they're useless or bad at something or whatever?  HUGE sweet spot for me.  And people befriending beasts?  Love that.  And someone sacrificing themselves to save others?  Can never get enough of that.  And happy endings?  Always my favorite.  So yeah... I cry a lot during this movie.

But I also laugh a lot too, cuz the Vikings are all pretty hilarious, and Hiccup's a great wry narrator.  Also, Hiccup?  Is basically my son, only a teenager instead of a ten-year-old.  Brainy, weedy, a little awkward, but so brave and loveable and kind.

This isn't really a review, just me gushing about how awesome this movie is.  This is totally going to end up on my "favorite new-to-me movies of 2018" list.  I can't wait to see the sequel.  And I saw the trailer for #3 in the theater last weekend and I cried over it too because... feels!  All the feels!

  1. It is a pretty fun movie! I didn't like it when I first saw it (I don't know why) but lately I have been loving it. And I know I cried a lot in the sequel.

    1. Interesting! I wasn't sure two of my kids would like it, just because Hiccup does get in trouble sometimes, and those two don't always like stories where kids get in trouble, but they ended up loving it.

  2. I can't wait until you see How to Train Your Dragon 2! I liked it even better (marginally) than How to Train Your Dragon. I really thank my daughter for dragging me to see both of them.

    1. Caftan Woman, me too! DKoren likes it much, much better than the first one -- I have her to thank for getting me to watch these! Well, her and my little niece and nephew who love them ;-)

  3. I cry too in this one... but the second one really makes me cry. The entire family over here is asking daily when we get to watch the second one with you, I'll have you know. :-D So glad you and the kids did enjoy this one so much.

    1. Skye, yes! Hiccup is awesome and funny. My 6-year-old lost her second front top tooth today, so she has a giant gap in her mouth right now, and my other two kids keep calling her Toothless. So she started calling my 10-year-old Hiccup, which is pretty perfect cuz he totally looks and acts like Hiccup would at age 10.

  5. YAAAAASSSSSS.

SO awesome that you've finally seen this! I actually just watched it again recently myself. There's so much to love in this franchise. I won't say that the second movie is better, but it's pretty incredible. I cry so much in both. And I was basically in tears throughout the entire trailer for the third one, so yeah. I'll be a mess.

  6. Isn't it a delight?! It's been a consistent favorite since it came out. I listen to the soundtrack while writing. :-) The "Romantic Flight" scene makes me cry--the swell of the music, the bit where Astrid leans into Hiccup and smiles, the shot of Toothless flying above the skyline of Berk...so, so good.

I really should see the sequel again. I'm not sure if I've seen it since it was in the theatre! :-o

  10. Isn't it great?? My daughter (just turned 5 yesterday) has been obsessed with the Dragons show on Netflix, Race to the Edge. We've watched the whole series probably four times now. For her birthday party on Saturday, guess what the theme was? AND I drew Toothless masks for the kids to decorate and then we had dragon races at the end of the party. I also gave her both movies, and now we've watched them several times. It is such a great show and the movies are great too, they are easy to watch over and over.

    1. Sarah, it is! I watched the second movie this week, and I didn't love it as much, but it was also really good. More meaty, actually, than the first. I don't have Netflix, but we found some of the eps on DVD as short films, kind of?

I suspect we'll be having a HTTYD birthday party sometime this year too. All 3 of my kids have been very into dragons in general for years, and we actually had a dragon birthday party about a year ago.

And yes! I love it when my kids like movies I also enjoy so I will like watching them over and over with them.
