Femnista Article, Gatsby Giveaway, and the 4th of July!

First, happy birthday to America!  We've got our flag out (see above), we're having friends over for a cookout, and we're going to shoot off some small (legal) fireworks to celebrate.  In a couple minutes, I'm going to make a strawberry pie :-9  Fun times!

In other news, Femnista is focusing on westerns this summer, which you know fills me with glee.  My article, "From One to Many: What Westerns Tell Us About the Past" is posted here.  It's about how the changes in western films reflected the changes in American society during the middle of the 20th century.  I hope that doesn't sound boring, but I promise I spend much of the article talking about movies like Destry Rides Again (1939), Shane (1953), Rio Bravo (1959), and The Magnificent Seven (1960).

Lastly, I just realized I never gave my readers over here a heads-up that I'm hosting a giveaway on my book blog to celebrate the end of my read-along for The Great Gatsby.  Not a lot of people have entered yet, so you have a pretty good chance of winning something!  Go here for details, to see the prizes, and to enter.

    1. Thanks, Charity! As I described it, I was like, "Well, that sounds interesting to me... but maybe not to other people?" Glad you don't think it's boring!

Happy 4th of July to you!

  2. Judging by mid-century United States films, aging blondes from Germany had a particular ability to vamp naive Americans!

  3. Happy 4th of July to you! :-) We had hot dogs and we're going to watch the Capitol Fourth concert soon, like we do every year.

Agree or disagree? That is the question...
