Liebster Award #? Who's Counting, Right?

Quiggy at The Midnite Drive-In nominated me for the Liebster Award.  Thank you, Quiggy!  I'm sorry it took me several weeks to finally post this.

Of course, for the Liebster, you're supposed to answer 11 questions from the person who gave you the award, then make up 11 new questions and tag 11 people, etc.  Here are my answers to Quiggy's questions:

1. What is your favorite genre of movie?  Westerns!  They are my happy place :-)

2. And what movie do you consider to be the paragon of that genre?  The Magnificent Seven (1960)

3. With which actor or actress, living or dead, would you most like to have a one-on-one (strictly platonic) dinner and conversation date?  At the moment, Alan Ladd, obviously.  I want to hug him (hugs can be platonic!) and reassure him he's a good actor and will not be forgotten.

4. If you were an actor or actress, which movie character would you most like to have played?  How to choose?  Oh, I'll just say I'd love to have played Maureen O'Hara's role opposite John Wayne in The Quiet Man (1952).

5. What is your favorite movie opening sequence, and, on the other side of the coin what is your favorite movie ending?  I love the way The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015) opens, with Cold War headlines and retro opening titles giving way to grainy '60s-style footage of East Berlin that pans over the city and focuses in on Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill).  It's such a downright groovy way to kick the film off.

As for a favorite movie ending, um... I love a lot of movie endings.  Okay, just to pick one, I love how Gunfight in Abilene (1967) ends very similarly to High Noon (1952), with the sheriff having dispatched the bad guy, standing in the empty street with his love interest at his side -- only in Abilene, he doesn't drop his tin star in the dirt, he's proud to be the sheriff.  It's a nice nod to the earlier film, while ending quite differently.

6. Which movie was the worst remake ever, and which one was the best?  There are a lot of bad remakes out there, and I'm not sure I can (or want to) choose a worst.  Sabrina (1995) is the best remake I have ever seen.  The original lacks chemistry, humor, and charm, but the remake has all of those in spades.

7. If you were a director, which movie would you like to direct? It can be one that hasn't been made yet or it could be a classic in which you replaced the actual director.  I want to write, direct, cast, and produce a movie version of The Blue Castle by L. M. Montgomery.  I would cast Michael Fassbender as Barney Snaith, and I think maybe Elizabeth Henstridge as Valancy Stirling.

8. On average, how many new movies ("new" to you, not necessarily new theatrical releases) do you watch in a month?  Two or three, usually.  More in the summer, when I go to the theater more often.  But I only watch four or five movies at home most months, and often it's less than that, so yeah... not a ton.  That's why my TBW pile grows instead of shrinking.

9. List at least one actor, actress or director you thought SHOULD have been given the Oscar as opposed to the one who did. Specify which movie they should have gotten said Oscar.  I've always been horribly upset that Harrison Ford did not with the Best Actor award for Witness in 1985.

10. Which movie has the best dialogue (meaning most eminently quotable)?  I quote so many movies!  So Very Many.  I'll just go with The Avengers (2012) on this one, cuz Joss Whedon writes the best dialog ever ever ever ever, and that's one of the movies I quote most.

11.Which of your movie blog posts is the one of which you are most proud?  Probably my totally made-up review of the fake film noir version of Hamlet, Murder Most Foul.  It was soooooo much fun to imagine up, find photos for, and write.  I just wish it really existed!

(You KNEW I'd slip a photo of Ladd in here somewhere, right?)

Okay, I'm also supposed to list 11 facts about myself that I think are interesting.  It's hard coming up with new facts all the time, so I'm sorry if I repeat some I've used previously.

1.  I named my first dog "Spunky" after a book by Janette Oke.
2.  I named my second dog "Lucas" after the main character on the show The Rifleman.
3.  I named my third dog "Westley" after the main character in The Princess Bride.
4.  I like listening to vinyl records.
5.  I went to the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, GA, in 1996.
6.  I collect Coca-Cola merchandise and decorated my kitchen with some of it.
7.  My MBTI type is ISFJ.
8.  I love Wolverine more than Thor.  (Try not to faint.)
9.  I've eaten bear, moose, and elk.
10.  I love playing with Legos.
11.  My middle name and my daughters' middle names all end with an 'e'.

I hope those were interesting.  Now to tag 11 bloggers!

2.  What era do most of your favorite movies take place in?
3.  What two actors/actresses have you always hoped would make a movie together, but didn't/haven't yet?

9.  When a character onscreen has to hold their breath, to you try to hold your breath to match theirs?
10.  What upcoming movies (or TV series) are you excited about?
11.  What are some of your favorite movie-oriented blogs?  (Or just blogs that post movie reviews sometimes.)

If I didn't tag you, but you want to answer these questions anyway, feel free to do so in the comments.  Or on your own blog -- you can ask me for an "official" tag if you want to :-)

  1. I had to answer #1. I'm a part-time reviewer of restaurants on Trip Advisor and I love to eat.

    1. Is there a movie that has really yummy-looking food in it that you'd love to eat?

My mouth absolutely salivates every time I watch "Trading Places". The smorgasbord that comes at the Christmas party at the middle of the movie has a pate that looks great and I wonder what kind it is.

    2. What era do most of your favorite movies take place in?

Since most of my movie favorites are modern heroes in strange situations (i.e. Big Trouble in Little China), I guess I'd have to say the present.

    3. What two actors/actresses have you always hoped would make a movie together, but didn't/haven't yet?

    John Wayne and Clint Eastwood.

    4. If money and time and supplies (and crafting ability) were not considerations, what movie character would you love to cosplay or dress up like for Halloween?

Dr. Frank N. Furter. But I haven't the body for it. I could probably pull off Riff Raff, though.

    5. Have you ever cosplayed or dressed up like a movie or TV character for Halloween?

I tried to pull off a pimp that resembled the one people thought Kramer was on an episode of Seinfeld.

    6. What movie would your friends/family be surprised to learn you truly enjoyed?

There are no surprises among my friends. They expect anything weird at anytime. Even if I told them I liked "around the World in 80 Days"... the 50's version.

    7. What's one book you hope no one ever makes into a film?

I'm assuming you mean a book I hate. "Catcher in the Rye" (Not as far-fetched as you might think. Attempts have been made at a film version)

    8. Do you know the Wilhelm Scream when you hear it?

No but I know the Munch Scream when I see it...

    9. When a character onscreen has to hold their breath, to you try to hold your breath to match theirs?

Hell, no. I have enough problems with my asthma as it is.

    10. What upcoming movies (or TV series) are you excited about?

I anticipate every Marvel superhero movie these days.

    11. What are some of your favorite movie-oriented blogs? (Or just blogs that post movie reviews sometimes.)

This one. Silver Scenes. B Noir Detour. And I'm always checking out new ones.

    1. Quiggy, what fun answers! High five to another MCU fan -- I really should blog about Civil War, as I've seen it 4 times now and just liked it so, so much.

And you also hate Catcher in the Rye? I thought I was the only one. Just never could connect with it, and I really tried hard cuz I love Conspiracy Theory so much.

A Wayne and Eastwood western would have been an interesting thing! I may or may not have a plot bunny for a book chasing around my head based on that now, thanks.

By the way, for some reason, I NEVER get an email alerting me that you've commented on my blog. I do for everyone else, but never for your comments -- it's the weirdest thing! I just went back through the comments thingie on my dashboard and discovered you've left me like 6 other comments I didn't know about. I'm so sorry! It must have seemed like I was ignoring you, which I guess I kind of was, but not on purpose. I'll be replying to all of them this morning.

  2. Well, now I've learned some more cool things about you! First off, I LOVE "The Man From Uncle"!!! Henry Cavill has been a crush of mine since I was 16 and saw him in the Count of Monte Cristo. The only problem was most of the movies he was in after that were inappropriate to watch. My favorite film opening is "The Hustler." The ending is pretty awesome too :)

I don't know if I can forgive you about that Sabrina remark... I'm not saying it's one of the best movies ever but Audrey is GORGEOUS in it!!!

Records and legos are awesome. I can't imagine my life without them and feel sorry for any child who doesn't have either. We had many "record parties" growing up (definition: put on "House Party" or Harry Belafonte, light a bunch of candles, and turn out the lights). My brother loves Coca-Cola stuff.

    1. Phyl, I want to hug you. ANOTHER UNCLE FAN!!!!! Yassssss. You, me, DKoren, and Millie need to form a support group or something. The only things I've seen Cavill in are this, Monte Cristo, and Man of Steel, and I only saw the latter for the first time a couple weeks ago. But I um... cast him as the gunfighter in the western retelling of Sleeping Beauty that I got published. He neeeeeeeeeds to make a western, IMHO. Pair him up with Armie Hammer again and put them both in a nice, dusty cowboy movie and I will spend all my money at the theater.

I've seen The Hustler like three times, but can't for the life of me remember the opening. Huh.

Yes, Audrey is gorgeous in Sabrina. So is William Holden, for that matter. But nobody seems to mesh with anybody else in it, and it feels very flat to me. To me. Lots of people love it.

I used to put a Dean Martin record on my parents' hi-fi when I was a teen and pretend I was living in the '60s. Good times.

    2. Finally answered your questions! http://phyllislovesclassicmovies.blogspot.com/2016/09/and-yet-another-liebster.html

Thanks again for the nomination :)

The only other movie I've seen with Cavill that you haven't listed is "The Cold Light of Day" which wasn't very good.. I think it was the moment when he slid down the road for several yards on a motorcycle and his pants didn't have even the tiniest hole in them... Or it may not have been good because my expectations were so high...

Cavill would definitely be cast in any movie I wrote haha. He would make the perfect Prince Charming. OMG THEY WOULD BE GREAT IN A WESTERN!!! Or at least make a sequel to UNCLE...

    3. Yay! Thanks for the link, Phyl, as I'm super behind on my blog reading. Once I catch up on my own comments and so on, then I can start trying to catch up on the way-too-many posts I have missed.

They would be so perfect in a western. I want this to happen. I want Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer on horses and in cowboy hats and riding around having a quippy good time. (And I want a sequel to UNCLE, but I fear that won't happen.)

  3. Elizabeth Henstridge as Valancy Stirling is PERFECT. :-)

  4. OH MY GOSH. I AM HERE FOR EVERYTHING IN THIS POST.

    1. Westerns are my heart and Magnificent 7 (aka Magnificent 6 + Horst the Worst) is pure gloriousness.

    2. Alan Ladd *heart eyes*

    3. I almost cried the first time I saw Man From UNCLE during the opening, because it was SO PERFECT. My friend and I turned at stared at each with expressions of like "IS THIS REALLY HAPPENING?!"

    4. Sabrina is the best remake ever made. So much better than its original (even though I love every in that cast, and obvi, Audrey is the most effervescent human ever created). It just works.

    5. I AM SCREAMING OVER HERE, BECAUSE I LOVE BLUE CASTLE MORE THAN ANYTHING AND I HAVE SPENT YEARS THINKING ABOUT A MOVIE VERSION AND I WAS LITERALLY PONDERING IT AGAIN LAST NIGHT WHILE I TOOK A SHOWER AND MICHAEL FASSBENDER AS BARNEY SNAITH IS NOW CANON IN MY MIND THANK YOU SO MUCH.

    6. I AM STILL SCREAMING ABOUT BLUE CASTLE. I LOVE IT THAT MUCH. I CAN'T STOP ALL-CAPS.

    7. Wolvie is always better than everyone else.

    8. Thank you so much for tagging me. You are the sweetest supporter! I have no internet currently (ugggghhhh) where I'm living, but I still try and get my response up soon!

CAN WE CROWD-FUND THE BLUE CASTLE FILM?! I HAVE NO MONEY; LITERALLY MY ACCOUNT IS MESSED UP RIGHT NOW AND MISTAKENLY SAYS I AM $653 OVERDRAWN. BUT, STILL. I WILL DO ANYTHING TO MAKE THIS FILM HAPPEN.

Okay, bye. Have a good day.

    1. Millie, you are too adorable. You're welcome at my campfire anytime.

      1. You mean Magnificent 6 + that other guy we never saw in anything else and can never remember the name of the character or who played him (or couldn't until I worked REally HArd to memorize that his name is Brad Dexter).

      2. Alan Ladd is my everything right now. I'm ridiculously besotted.

      3. My best friend and I have glommed onto UNCLE so hard we have to watch it together (via the internet) every couple of months or we start having health problems. Or we probably would, if we didn't watch it that often, but we don't want to take that chance.

      4. Thank you. You speak truth.

      5. I NEVER EVEN HEARD OF BLUE CASTLE UNTIL ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO AND THEN IT TOOK ME A YEAR BEFORE I WAS CONVINCED TO READ IT, AND NOW I DON'T KNOW HOW I EXISTED UNTIL THEN. You're welcome.

      6. IT DESERVES SCREAMING.

      7. This is undeniably a fact.

      8. You're welcome :-) It took me like a month to finish this post, so don't worry about being "late." There is no deadline.

Yeah, really, that movie needs to be made. But only if I can write and direct it so it doesn't get screwed up. #ControlEnthusiast

  5. Tag!

    :-)

    1. Not that I can think of off the top of my head . . . ? I'm shockingly bad at noticing physical details (like food) in film, though.
    2. No single era. They're all over the map.
    3. Daisy Ridley and Richard Armitage. I'm still waiting to see them pair up as Lizzy and Darcy :-)
    4. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm . . . Maria from "The Sound of Music," maybe? I've been told that I look sorta like her.
    5. Nope.
    6. "Thirteen Days," maybe? It's a heavily male-dominated-political-military film (about the Cuban Missile Crisis), so a lot of my friends might be surprised to learn it's in my top 5 favorite movies. But it is. BECAUSE IT'S JUST THAT GOOD.
    7. "The Man Who Was Thursday." Hollywood, I'm talking to YOU. DO NOT ATTEMPT IT. You'll just mess everything up. Literally everything. It's not the sort of story that can be told through film.
    8. The Wilhelm Scream? What's THAT?
    9. Nope.
    10. The new "Beauty and the Beast" adaptation, "Rogue One," and "Star Wars: Episode Eight."
    11. "Hamlette's Soliloquy" and "Coffee Classics and Craziness" and "Meanwhile in Rivendell" :-)

  6. Congrats, Rachel.

So much fun to read your answers. The Quiet Man is a charming film and of course I adore Sabrina although it's been a LONG time since I saw it. Once upon a time I watched it time and again. I've not read The Blue Castle but keep hearing it's a must read, and anything Avengers related and I'm in. :)

    1. Thanks, Rissi! The Blue Castle is absolutely a must-read. It's a bit far-fetched and full of coincidences, and unbearably wonderful anyway.

  7. Mag7 the paragon of its genre? You know that's right! ;) (I'm hoping to watch it with my grandfather sometime soon because he's about the only family member who hasn't seen it yet. And everyone else has watched it so many times that they're sick of it. Except for me, obviously.)

Right now, the actor I'd most like to have some one-on-one time with is Ralph Macchio. Or Harrison Ford. Or Dana Andrews. Or Audrey Hepburn. It changes all the time, really. :)

Aw, your questions look so fun. :( *sigh* I'd love to answer them all in the comments, but I have a blog post to write. I'll just say that, yes, I ALWAYS recognize the Wilhelm Scream (and so do my brothers).

Ralph Macchio is an interesting guy. I remember he was writing Spider-Man comics back in the '90s that were really good.

Good job recognizing the Wilhelm Scream! I generally recognize it, but not always.
