Spring To-Do List 2017

Here we go!  All the things I want to get done by the end of May.  Because I've been hitting my reading and watching goals consistently, I'm actually upping those a bit to make them more of a challenge.

~ Read Hood by Stephen Lawhead

~ Read Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome

~ Read 4 more books from my TBR shelves

~ Read 4 books from the library

(found on Pinterest)

~ Watch The Great Gatsby (2013)

~ Watch 4 more movies from my TBW shelves

~ Start blogging about how 2017 is the 500th anniversary of the start of the Protestant Reformation

~ Sew a skirt using a new pattern (I want to try this one) and the Jane Austen fabric I bought a while ago from Etsy shop Cute Little Fabric Shop:

Ardently Austen Text Teal by Riley Blake Designs - Jane Austen Literature - Quilting Cotton Fabric - by the yard fat quarter half
(Image copied from Cute Little Fabric Shop's listing)

~ Finish knitting my Newt Scamandar scarf

~ Finish the rewrites of "Cloaked" and be into the pesky line-editing stage.

~ Bake myself something ridiculously chocolatey for my birthday

~ Make a miniature Hobbit home in one of my flower containers out on my deck -- I've started a Pinterest board to hold lots if ideas for this.

~ Hold my annual group yard sale

As spring tends to be a really busy time for me, what with finishing up the school year and everything, I think that's enough for my to-do list this time.

Do you have anything you're planning to do or accomplish, or read or watch?

  1. I've not seen Fantastic Beast yet (nor read The Cursed Child, probably won't), and I'm not sure I want too since these new things don't seem very canon, I such a snob. I did have to go look up the scarf; I love seeing crafts from movies and books. I've made a Ravenclaw scarf (movie design, book colors) myself.

    1. Livia, I haven't read The Cursed Child either -- I can't quite decide if I want to or not. But I LOVED Fantastic Beasts. Saw it twice, devoured the screenplay, and can't wait for the DVD. I consider it absolutely canon because it's written by JK Rowling and fits beautifully in with the established Harry Potter world. In fact, in some ways I think it's better-developed than HP, and because it's not aimed at kids, it's able to delve into some deeper and more complex issues. It has astonished me in ways I never expected.

  2. Don't overwhelm yourself! That's quite a to-do list, you didn't make much room for all of the spontaneous things you may discover between now and May ( and those are often the best things to explore ). However, I must say that Swallows and Amazons sounds like a tempting read. I never even heard of it before.

    1. Well, that's why I don't specify all the books and movies I should watch -- plenty of room there to just read and watch what I feel like. But also get to some specific titles. This is actually a shorter list than my winter list, which had 16 things on it. This one only had 13 :-)

Lots of people have recommended Swallows and Amazons as something my 9-year-old would like, but it looks so cute, I want to read it myself first!

    2. How well are you clipping along on this to-do list?

    3. Well, I've got 6 checked off totally, and should have 2 more checked off by the end of this week. There are 3 I'm pretty sure I'm not going to accomplish, and a couple more that I'm iffy on ;-)

    4. Good for you! What did you think of Swallows and Amazons? ( If that was one of the "checked" items... )

    5. Alas, that's one I haven't gotten to. I went on a library book binge in April, and now I'm judging the INSPY awards and have to read 5 specific books for that by mid-June, and my TBR pile has suffered much neglect accordingly. However, people say Swallows and Amazons is a great summer read, so I'm hoping to get to it in the next few months!

    6. I was looking at Virginia McKenna's filmography this morning ( my sister and I enjoyed Ring of Bright Water recently ) and lookee at what I found :

I guess the book was made into a movie that is now considered a British children's classic, much like Lionel Jeffries' "The Railway Children" ( 1970 ). Which, incidentally, if you are not familiar with Edith Nesbit's works, I highly recommend them!

    7. How cool is that! I will have to see if I can find it to watch someplace. Thanks!

I LOVE the book The Railway Children, and I think I saw the Jeffries movie as a kid, but not since then. Might be time to scout that out as well, huh?

  3. I have spring break this week! I hope to write more (I'm almost at the 40000-word mark!!!) and I also have at least two movies I plan to watch: "Chariots of Fire" and "Lilo and Stitch."

    1. Jessica, yay! Spring Break! Good luck with your writing and watching. I've never seen Lilo and Stitch, but I have loved Chariots of Fire since I was very young.

    2. Thanks, Hamlette! I'm really looking forward to it all! I've not seen "Lilo and Stich" either, but I really love the soundtrack . . .

  4. Oh, I hope you like The Great Gatsby! I'm not much one for the 20's, and the story of The Great Gatsby is rather depressing, but the movie is very well done.
I really need to push myself to do more sewing, and I have some cute fabric just waiting to be a skirt! But I think I'll wait until Spring Break to start it.
And yes, happy Reformation 500! :)

    1. Abby, I'm pretty excited to see this version of Gatsby. I actually tried to go see it in the theater with my sister-in-law when it first came out, but it was sold out! And then I never got another chance at it. The only version I've ever seen is Alan Ladd's, so it's going to be cool to see another interpretation. Kind of getting me geared up for the read-along of Gatsby I plan to host this summer.

I have a terrible habit of buying the fabric for a project and then letting it sit on my table for like six months before I finally get around to making something. Sigh. I bought a whole bunch of cute fabric last spring that I finally made into a skirt just in time for Christmas.

Happy Reformation 500 to you too!

  5. I love that you don't find lists daunting. I would look at all that, go, nope! And do absolutely none of it. LOL! Which, of course, is why I'm not a listy person and you are. :-D .

    1. DKoren, hee! Nope, I find lists incredibly helpful, even soothing. If I'm starting to stress out over all the stuff I need to get done in the near future, whether it's for a busy day or because I've got some big event coming up, I just sit down and make a list of what needs doing, and then the stress melts away because I don't have to feel like I'm going to forget important things. I wrote them down, so now I don't have to remember.

And I love checking stuff off. I'm making progress on this list already, in the reading and watching categories, and that motivates me to keep doing so.

  6. A Hobbit garden would be the coolest! You'll have to post a picture when it's all complete and awesome looking. :) Also, yes to chocolaty goodness for your birthday!!!

    1. Kara, I hope I can make it as cool in actuality as it is in my head :-)

I'm already trying to figure out what form of chocolatey goodness I want to make... and my birthday is more than a month away :-)

  7. Oh, those Hobbit garden ideas are so precious! I'm very curious to see what you'll make of it!
