My 100 Favorite Movies -- Part One

I'm in a listy mood, and Eva recently did a list of 30 of her favorite movies, and I decided hey, why not do a new list of my favorite movies too?  I did a list of my top 30 lo these twelve years ago, but So Much Has Changed, my friends.  So much.  Time for a fresh list.  And a more comprehensive list.  Here's the first half, numbers 51 through 100.  I'll post numbers 1 through 50 tomorrow.

I've tried really hard to put this in order of how much I love them, but that's very subjective, so just know that if a movie is on this list, I reeeeeeally love it, and today I love it more than the ones under it, but tomorrow it might slide a little higher or a little lower.  But I'd still love it.

If I've blogged about a movie, I've linked the title to the appropriate post.

  1. I love lists! And I love movies! So I'm eating this up like candy. ;-P

I was tickled to see The Blue and the Gray on here. Even after North and South happened and ruined my life, I still love TBATG. It's just so...wholesome. ;-)

You like The Quick and the Dead?! Really? My daddy and I tried to watch it the other night, but we didn't care for it at all. I thought it was way too mediocre. I couldn't take it seriously. (And my dad couldn't do Sharon Stone as a gunslinger.)

    Looking forward to part two!

    1. Emma Jane, I'm glad you've enjoyed it! Part two coming up shortly:-)

Yes, I do quite love The Quick and the Dead. It's an odd, rather fluffy western, with some doofy cinematography, but I love it anyway. Mostly for how Russell Crowe breaks my heart in it. Also, I love the soundtrack. It's basically the only thing I've ever seen Sharon Stone in, and you know if I lived in the old west I'd be yearning to be a gunfighter despite being a girl, so yup, I'm a fan.

  2. The Force Awakens, P&P 05, and Amazing Grace. Yes, yes, and yes. ;-)

I actually haven't seen a fair number of these . . . prob'ly because I really need to watch more Westerns. But cool list, still!

Question: I've been thinking a bit about list-making lately, for various reasons . . . and I was wondering: Does it strike you as possibly an Si trait? Because I've kind of realized that I really am NOT a "lists" person . . . it's just not something that occurs naturally to me to do. I have, for instance, movies that I say are in my "top three" or whatever, but it would never occur to me to make a physical list in writing of all the movies I like best. And it seemed to me that the folks I DO know who like making lists (my brother, for example) strike me as more Si-users than Se-users. What do you think? (Apologies for the random-ness of this question.)

    1. Hi Jessica - chiming in, cuz my sister and b-i-l are also Si users, and both are HUGE list makers. I am Se, and I am not a list maker. I make lists only when my sister or friends ask me to, but it's not my natural go-to. I like the idea of lists, but tend not to actually do it.

    2. My ENFJ father is obsessed with making lists, but in his case they are all to-do lists. (Mine are also to do lists.) So no, I don't think it's a Si thing.

Si is a perceiving function. It automatically compares new experiences and ideas with what is previously known to Si. It is an internal library in the mind cataloging experiences.

    3. Jessica, hey! Are you saying I have a one-track mind? Barely 1/5 of my favorite movies are westerns. But yes, you're right, that's a lot :-D

DKoren and Charity, maybe lists of favorite things is a Si trait? All that comparing going on? I do lists of things to do a LOT too, but also I've got that ongoing series here of my 10 fave movies in various categories, etc.

    4. Nope, Hamlette. I didn't say you had a one-track mind. I just noticed that you liked a lot of westerns . . . which is cool :-)

Comparing--YES. I think that's what I was trying to get at; that it doesn't come as naturally to me to make "favorites" lists because I don't tend to compare stuff as much. I do make "to-do" lists a lot, because I'd never be able to keep track of what I'm supposed to be doing without them. But I couldn't keep a long mental list of my favorite books or movies . . . my brain just doesn't work that way. I more pick out two or three top favorites and leave it at that.

    5. Jessica, I was just teasing you :-) Tomorrow I'm going to post about the patterns in this list of 100 favorites, and I'm counting stuff up right now... I think 19 out of 100 are westerns. Hee! (I don't have a one-track mind. I have a two-track mind! Two train tracks stretching toward the horizon through a deliciously western land of enchantment.)

      Delete
    6. Haha . . . I THOUGHT you were teasing :-) Ni-doms like noticing patterns, y'know.

I ain't blaming you. Western stories are beautiful things. Like I told Eva, I'm going to write one SOMEDAY. It's hard because I have sooooooooooooo many other story ideas piling up and I don't have time to do them all at once. But I will. Someday :-)

    7. Jessica, I well know the pain and frustration of having lots of story ideas waiting in the wings. On the other hand, it's nice knowing you won't run out of things to write any time soon!

  3. 100 favorites! That is ambitious. :-D Many of these are among my favorites as well. Looking forward to the rest of the list.

    1. DKoren, the funny thing is, it wasn't even hard until I got to the last 10. Numbers 91-100 were tricky because suddenly I had all these movies I love but that are kind of borderline favorites, so they weren't sure things for the list, and I had to decide between them all.

  4. Fun list! I've been working on a massive redux of my original Top 100 Movies. I've probably seen about half of these, but hey, now I have more movies to add to my watch list! And of the ones you listed thus far, Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost are at the top for me. :)

    1. Thanks, James! I look forward to your top 100 getting redone -- I think I'm going to need to do this every 10 years, really.

Star Wars and Raiders are surely on many, many lists of favorites :-) They are wonderful!

  5. I can't imagine compiling a list like this! Mine tend to be "my favorite movie all the time" (Gladiator) followed by "my favorite movie of the moment" (it varies), and "my top ten or so most of the time." Everything else I could not rank in order. :D

Lots of these, I like too. Emma'd be way higher on my list though. ;)

    1. Charity, my favorite movie of all time has remained the same since I was about 2. And numbers 2 and 3 have been the same since I was a teen. The rest kind of slide around, and ten years from now my list will probably be rather different! Just like my list of top 30 from 2004 has several movies on it that aren't even in my top 100 anymore.

    2. I think I have about 20 titles that "I love" all the time; the rest of my collection is forgotten about for years at a time. Hmm...

      Delete
    3. Oh dear. Well, my movies are all on big shelves that take up a whole wall in my living room, so I couldn't forget them even if I wanted to, but I must admit that I go years and years without watching some movies.

      Delete
    4. Mine are in a bureau (sorted alphabetically, just to show how neurotic I am) under the television. I was running out of room so I actually went through them and weeded about 50 titles out of my collection. I feel occasional guilt about how much I have spent on movies over the years, but then I remind myself that they gave me joy for awhile, so even if I lose interest in them, they served their initial purpose.

Sometimes I have no interest in a movie for a long time, but when I return to it, I remember why I liked it in the first place and the love rekindles. Other films float in my unconscious mind with little hearts around them permanently. ;)

    5. When I was in college, my apartmentmates and I could fit all our movies in a cheap Walmart bureau, one drawer for each of us. Now I have 5 bookcases filled with them, four of movies, and one of TV shows that is double-stacked on all the shelves. (Mine are grouped by genre, and then alphabetically, just to show how neurotic I am.) I go through them at least once a year and weed out the ones I just don't watch enough or don't love enough, and then sell them to the used book store.

And that happens to me too. I went through a phase in my teen years where I adored Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and watched it allllllllll the time. Watched it again when Alan Rickman died for the first time in decades and all the love came flooding back. I've almost sold that one several times, but I'm keeping it for the nostalgia right now.

  6. Ooh, I love this list! I would have a hard time compiling a list of 100 favorite movies. I've seen a lot of movies, but probably not enough that I could pick 100 that I absolutely love.

Yes to all the Star Wars, Jane Austen, and POTC! Oh, and State Fair! I just saw that movie in December, and I thought it had a fun, whimsical charm to it. Of course, there's also Amazing Grace (which I saw recently and still need to review).

    Nice post, Hamlette! :)

    1. Mary, yes, 100 is a lot. And I'm waiting for the comments to roll in that say, "Hey, wait, you said you loved such-and-such-movie -- how come it's not on this list?" Cuz not every movie I love could make the cut.

Maybe you could do a list of top 10 or top 25 or something, though? That would be a fun blog post!

    2. Yes, Support Your Local Sheriff is so much fun! ;D James Garner never fails to make me crack up. We own both that and Support Your Local Gunfighter (which I've seen quite a lot, too) but I definitely prefer the first one. I don't know why there're so unknown - they're really fun movies. :D

  9. Loved this! :)

I spot quite a few I've seen and quite a few that I want to see...let's just say, I love lists and I love this one in particular (the whole 100, not just this part). And thanks for linking to me. :)

    ~Eva

P.S. I double-checked this list with your '1-50' one to make sure and I was right - you put Last Crusade above Raiders of the Lost Ark. I thought Raiders was your favorite Indy movie...or has that changed? (Crusade's my favorite - I've never really gotten why people adore Raiders so much.)

    1. Eva, I'm glad you're digging it! You're welcome :-)

Yeeeeeeeeeah, I realized that I have watched Last Crusade way more often than Raiders, and that while I think Raiders IS a better movie, I LIKE Crusade better. But also, like I said... sometimes these slide up and down in ranking. The days I published these, this is how I ranked them. I've looked at the lists several times since then and been like, "Wait, do I really like Oscar better than Tombstone?" Some days, yes.

  10. Ahhh! SO many amazing favorites...

On your list, these would include: Emma, Amazing Grace, Pride and Prejudice, The Three Musketeers, and probably more. Also, North to Alaska is way fun! :)

    1. Rissi, you've seen North to Alaska??? Rock on! That's the first John Wayne movie I can remember watching, and I wish it was better-known because it is just so funny and enjoyable.
