Guest Post about the "Evita" Soundtrack

I've got a post up here on J and J Productions today, all about the soundtrack for Evita (1996).

I have such fond memories of this movie.  Watching it for the first time over Thanksgiving break my freshman year of college.  Loving it so much, I bought a copy of the movie AND the soundtrack.  Sharing the movie with my parents and some of their friends, all of them expecting not to like it, and all of them enjoying it.  I have most of the major songs memorized, and quite a few of the lesser-known as well.

I remember reading once that as a young man, Antonio Banderas lived in an apartment with thin walls very near a theater where people were practicing, then performing, Evita, and he learned all the songs by hearing them over and over that way.  So when he was cast as Che, he didn't have to learn any of the lyrics because he knew them already!  That story makes me grin :-D

  2. Never saw the movie, but back in college I saw a traveling production of it. It was very engaging.

    1. How cool! I've seen so few live productions of musicals, alas. I bet this one would be awesome on stage!

  3. Great story about Antonio Banderas.

My first intro to this one was a couple stage versions (high school and college) that my sister played in, and hen the soundtrack to the Broadway version with Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin. And we listened to that CD A LOT. All the time. Then the movie came out, and we went and saw it, and loved it, even with the differences. I just love listening to Antonio singing. "Rainbow High" is my favorite song. I also love Antonio's part of "Lament" at the very very end of the movie. From the Broadway version, "Peron's Latest Flame" was always highly amusing.

Might have to either listen to or watch this soon now!

(And randomly, I remember when Evita first came out in the 70's, because there was this tv spot for it that seemed to be always playing, and it was really creepy to my young self. It got seared into my memory!)

    1. I should try to find some of the tracks with Mandy Patinkin as Che, because I do quite like him, so I'd love to hear him in the role!

And yes, I could listen to Antonio sing all day and not get tired of it. In fact, I've put this CD on repeat more than once. Sadly, now that my kids have started paying attention to lyrics, I have to either skip a bunch of tracks or listen to it when they're not around.

How interesting that it had a creepy TV ad once upon a time! Do you remember what in particular was creepy about it?

Agree or disagree? That is the question...
