Did I ever mention I have fanfiction published online? It's all about the 1960's tv show Combat!, which was a historical drama about WWII. Well, one story does cross over a character from Angel (and previously of Buffy the Vampire Slayer). You can access them at www.storynook.net --most of them are on the "Purple Hearts" site, which is an offshoot of Story Nook now. The ones on "Purple Hearts" are under the name White Queen. There's one on the Story Nook site too--"Bulletproof". That's the crossover one...Spike wanders into the Combat! world. Anyway, just thought I'd share the link.

I really like writing fanfic. It lets me try out new ideas without having to create new characters. That really cuts down a writers' workload. It's challenging too though--you have to really nail those characters or else your readers will dislike you for being uncanonical and stop reading your work. I've got a new bit of fanfic percolating in my brain right now. It's going to be kinda unconventional though, at least compared to the fanfic I usually write. I'm crossing a Combat! character into the Angel universe, and in the present day. But then, there are Star Trek/Combat! stories around, so I think I'll still have some readers...

  1. Hi, it's the anonymous Housekarl. I checked out some of your fanfic. Even though I know nothing of Combat!, my favorite bit was in one of the Combat fics, http://www.storynook.net/WQIntermission.html, where you get to contrasting Saunders' internal reflections with his external communications to his mom. Three painful paragraphs about Summers being shredded by mines in his head, two sentences about the leaves changing to his mother. That was really effective. Makes him seem all tortured and still empathic.

Let me know if you get that Combat!/Angel crossover done, because I'd be really interested to see what the Angel universe _is_ in the present day. I still love the ending for that show, it left room for much heroism and many new tales.

My favorite Angel fanfic is "Blood and Water." It's at http://www.fanfiction.net/s/139517/1/. Written after season 1 when Gunn's character wasn't well defined, but otherwise as good as an episode.

  2. When I read your front page, it shows this post has a comment, but when I click on this link, it shows no comments. What's wrong with Blogger? I left a comment before.

  3. Housekarl, I don't know what was wrong with Blogger when you checked it, because I can read both your comments just fine, and my mom could too. So maybe it was just being recalcitrant when you checked it.

Thanks for the comments, btw! It's cool to know someone besides my parents reads my blog ;-)

And thanks for the nice things you said about "Intermission". The part you mentioned, about the juxtaposition between what Saunders thought and what he could write, is exactly what I was trying to bring across, and you've let me know I succeeded.

Also, the character mentioned in that story, Summers, is introduced vaguely in my story "The Torrent", along with three other new soldiers: Harris, Rosenberg, and Chase ;-) Because I'm silly, that's why.

Did you read "Bulletproof"? Since you're familiar with the character of Spike, I'd be interested to hear how you think I did with him.

I haven't actually started writing my next "Angel"/"Combat!" crossover yet, but I might start it tonight. So I'm afraid you'll have to be patient with that one.

Finally, thanks for the link. I'll check it out. I don't read much "Angel" or "Buffy" fanfic anymore because most of the time the writers are too uncanonical and gooshy. But if you liked this one, it must be pretty groovy.

  4. I am still not up to providing feedback on Bulletproof, but I did run across a couple comic strips on the topic of fanfic:

  5. You "don't feel up to" giving me feedback on "Bulletproof"? Hmmm. Does this mean you're ill? Or does this mean you don't have any nice things to say and are afraid of angering me lest I cut off your cookie supply? Or does it mean you really just haven't gotten around to reading it yet? Dude, trust me, I'm tough--I've taken a lot of decently scathing criticism on my writing and lived to tell the tale. In fact, I'd rather someone told me, "I didn't like it and here's precisely why" than just say, "It's nice."

  6. They should datestamp these comments. Time is not enough.

What I meant is that giving feedback on Bulletproof is one of the things in my procrastination zone. Good feedback can be thought-consuming, but really where I'm stuck is just giving it a serious reading instead of skimming it while I'm waiting for webcomix to load. Do you have any episodes of "Combat" on tape, because that would make it a lot easier to shorthand the characters.

  7. I see. You know, you don't have to feel obligated to give me feedback. I only asked because you have experience with the Spike character, which is something most of the people who read it (except Cowboy and my brother and two other people) didn't have. Spike was a lot of fun to write, and I think I did fairly well by him, but a different perspective is always good. So don't feel like you NEED to give me feedback, okay?

Agree or disagree? That is the question...
