Sour Patch Kids. Cherry Coke. Microsoft Windows. Pictionary. Chex Mix. The year 1985 was a whiz-bang year for launching new products... and new movies. This summer, my friend and frequent co-conspirator co-host Jim/Quiggy of The Midnite Drive-in and I are celebrating the movies released in1985. We invite you to join us!
The weekend of June 7 and 8, let's all get in our own imaginary time machines and revisit the cinemascape of forty years ago. So many amazing and often iconic movies were released that year, and we want you to help us celebrate as many of them as we can.
We do have a few rules:
1. You can write about any movie, TV show, or specific TV episode that was released in the calendar year of 1985. We will make an exception to include films that came out in December of 1984, since they most likely would still be in theaters in 1985, but we draw the line at Dec. 1, 1984. And nothing that was released after Dec. 31, 1985, will be admissible. Sign up by leaving a comment on this post, or on Quiggy's post.
2. Only new entries please. No fair reposting something you've already written. Post your review sometime during the blogathon.
3. Grab one of the banners here and use it in your post to promote the blogathon. We'd also love it if you added one to your blog beforehand to spread the word!
4. Let one of us know when your post goes live, with a comment on one of our launch posts so we can include it in the official list.
5. As always, have fun! It's not necessarily a bad thing to be preoccupied with 1985, after all...

I have two different ideas for this blogathon, one definitely more highbrow than the other. My other pick is a definite nostalgia choice as I was 1 in 1985.
ReplyDeleteIf my more highbrow choice was released in Japan in June 1984, but came out in the US in 1985, does that count?
My personal take, whatever the choice, is OK as long as the US release date falls within the parameters. (I am US-centric of a mind, after all.)
DeleteKayla, I agree with Quiggy -- we set the parameters to be "movies in the theater during 1985" so if the US release was in 1985, that's totally acceptable.
DeleteI was 5 in 1985 and didn't see any movies in the theater that year, lol.
Okay, cool. I would like to write about "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind."
DeleteMy more lowbrow choice was "Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer" LOL.
When I was 5 in 1989, I saw "The Little Mermaid" in the theater! I am fairly confident that my parents didn't bring a 1-year old to the theater in 1985--though I did go camping at 6 months!... which apparently was a mistake, according to my parents.
Actually, put me down for both. I will cover both ends of the 1985 animation spectrum. "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" and "Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer."
DeleteKayla- Whimsically Classic
Kayla, got it! I'll put you down for both.
DeletePut gas and plutonium in the DeLorean and fire it up. Let's roll.
ReplyDeleteSave the clock tower! Save the clock tower!
DeleteAs the sports guy, I feel like this event needs Brewster's Millions.
ReplyDeleteHi, Rachel! I'd like to do "Jewel Of the Nile," if that's OK.
ReplyDeleteRebecca, sounds great! I've added you to the list.
DeleteHi, can you add me with, Letter to Brezhnev? It's a British movie.
ReplyDeleteGill, sounds good! You're on the list.
DeleteWow...how time flies. Please put me down for The Goonies. It is high time I rewatch it.
ReplyDeleteI'm in! And I'll go ahead and cover Back to the Future! If it's not already taken, it looks like it should still be available...
ReplyDeleteCordy, that's definitely a great choice! Adding you to the roster now...
DeleteI don't know if you are doing "The Titanic in Pop Culture Blogathon" but there is a blog to search for "RJ's Blog
ReplyDeleteWordPress.com
https://velociraptor256.wordpress.com titanic month" which was a blog that did a series of Titanic reviews. Not saying you can use it as an inspiration. Just that it makes an interesting comparison
Hello, Anonymous. Nope, I'm not in charge of the Titanic blogathon, just planning to participate. That's cool that a blog did a series of reviews about Titanic movies, though!
DeleteIf you are doing “Titanic blogathon”, I highly recommend the book “On a Sea of Glass: The Life & Loss of the RMS Titanic” by Tad Fitch, J. Kent Layton, and Bill Wormstedt. It is in my humble opinion the best book on Titanic besides Walter Lord’s “A Night to Remember”
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, I read A Night to Remember years and years ago, while doing a high school research paper on the sinking. Sounds like an interesting new book!
DeleteI just realised that you probably are not the main person behind “Titanic blogathon” but I think "RJ's Blog
ReplyDeleteWordPress.com
https://velociraptor256.wordpress.com titanic month" might be interesting for them to look at. Perhaps you could tell them, if you know them
Anonymous, the Titanic event is being hosted by Taking Up Room. You can click on that link in this message, or on the button on my blog's sidebar (or in my Upcoming Blog Events page) to find their blog. Since it's your blog discovery, I suggest you tell them yourself, since I don't really know much about this Velociraptor blog and thus wouldn't be comfortable recommending it to people.
