Time for my second party game for Legends of Western Cinema Week!  Below is a list of TV westerns, all named after their main characters.  Your job is to tell me who starred as the that titular main character!  If you are bad at actor names, that's okay, because I have a whole bank at the bottom of this post for you to choose from... but there are a couple of extra names in there that don't get used, just to spice things up.

Announcing 2026's Legends of Western Cinema Week

Gather up your boots and saddles, friends!  Today, on the 119th anniversary of John Wayne's birth, Heidi of Along the Brandywine and I are pleased to announce we are going to co-host Legends of Western Cinema Week next month!

From June 22 through June 26, join us in celebrating western movies and TV shows, anything and everything involving cowboys and celluloid.

As in years past, Heidi and I will provide a blog tag for people to fill out if they so desire.  We'll also do some games or other activities... and maybe a small giveaway.  The rest of the partying is up to you!

There's no sign-up roster or anything like that.  But if you want to discuss a post idea with us, drop a comment on my post or Heidi's, and we'll happily chat!  You can contribute a movie or TV show review, a list of favorites, a character analysis, a game of your own -- whatever your western-loving heart dreams up.

The only real rule is that your posts must have celebratory, not derogatory, attitude toward the western genre.  If you dislike westerns, spend the week thinking about something else, mmkay?

My Tag Answers for We Love Fairy Tales Week

I mean, I should answer them, since I'm the party host, eh?

I hope you've all been having a jolly time this week!  Today is your last day to enter my giveaway -- I'll choose and announce the winners tomorrow!  Might be late in the day, as I have a pretty full Saturday lined up.

Okay, here we go.

1.  What's your favorite fairy tale?  The Twelve Dancing Princesses!  And has been since I was a small child, reading a children's book version with amazing artwork.  I love that the hero solves the mystery using cleverness, not strength or magic.  Well, not much magic -- he does have an invisibility cloak.  But that just makes things a bit easier.  I think he could have solved it eventually without that.

2.  If you could cast any actors and actresses ever in a movie version of that fairy tale, who would you pick?  Hmm.  What about Jude Law as the retired soldier returning home from the war, Samuel L. Jackson as the king, Letitia Wright as the youngest sister, and Tessa Thompson as the oldest sister.  And the soldier falls for the oldest sister, not the youngest.

3.  Do you have a favorite fairy tale movie?  The Princess Bride (1987) -- no contest!  True, it's kind of a spoof of fairy tales, but I still think it counts.

4.  Do you have a favorite book that retells a fairy tale?  I really love the novella Falling Snow by Skye Hoffert, which is included in the Five Magic Spindles anthology.

5.  If you got to be in a stage or film production of a classic fairy tale, what fairy tale would you want to be in, and who would you like to play?  I would love to play the fairy godmother in a version of Cinderella set in either the Old West or the 1940s.

6.  Do you like fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen or the Grimm Brothers best?  Or someone else's?  I like lots of fairy tales, including some by both of them, some from the Arabian Nights, and others, too!  I don't have a clear favorite source.

7.  What more obscure fairy tale do you think more people should know about?  I'm really fond of The Boy Who Learned to Shudder, also known as The Story of the Youth Who Went Forth to Learn What Fear Was.  It's a sweet one.

I've created a game for We Love Fairy Tales Week that allows you to build your own fairy tale based on what you roll with a die (or random number generator) for each question.  

Simply roll a die once for each question, then use that number's answer to build the next part of your fairy tale.  Put all your parts together in the comments, and embellish them a bit if you want to, and we can all enjoy each others' brand-new fairy tales!

Announcing We Love Fairy Tales Week

If you love fairy tales -- by which I mean anything and everything from the original fairy tales from long ago to the latest retellings -- then you are in luck!  Because I am gearing up to host my annual "We Love XYZ" blog party in February, and this year's theme is Fairy Tales!

Join me February 9-14 as we celebrate all things fairy tale related!  As usual, I will provide a party tag, a giveaway with themed prizes, and some party games.  I also plan to do at least one post on my book blog, The Edge of the Precipice.

Everything else is up to you!  And you can start by nabbing one of these party buttons and displaying it on your own blog with a link back to this post so others can join the fun.

All sorts of blog posts are welcome, from fairy tale book and movie reviews, to lists of your favorite fairy tales or favorite retellings, musings on what themes draw you to specific fairy tales, or anything else you can dream up that has to do with fairy tales!

The one real rule is that, since this is a party and open to people of all ages, your posts must be:

• celebratory (no fairy tale bashing!)
• appropriate for all ages

Where in the West? A Party Game

Western films sometimes take place in an amorphous "Old West" setting without naming a specific state or territory as their location.  Others take place over a wide swath of land, moving from one locality to another.  But sometimes, a western takes place in one particular state.  Today, I have rounded up fifteen westerns that do take place in one US state, and your job is to figure out which state goes with each of them!

To make it a little easier, here are the states that get used:

Gearing up for Legends of Western Cinema Week 2025!

Gather 'round, lads and lasses!  Gather 'round!

Heidi of Along the Brandywine and Olivia of Meanwhile, in Rivendell... and I are pleased to announce that our beloved Legends of Western Cinema Week blog extravaganza is returning this summer!

This year, we'll be celebrating August 25-29, and you are hereby invited to join the party!  As usual, we'll provide some of the fun, such as games, giveaways, and a blog tag to fill out, but the rest of the shindig depends on YOU!

We don't have a sign-up sheet of any kind, as we like to keep this event informal and easygoing.  But I encourage you to start thinking now about what you would like to contribute.  Posts of all kinds are welcome, whether they be movie reviews, games, lists of favorites, your own fan art, or something else entirely that you dream up.  

The only real rule is that posts should celebrate western movies and shows, not malign or denigrate them.  It's fine to mention flaws in a review, of course, but the point of this event is to have fun and share our love for westerns on film.

Welcome to We Love Musicals Week!  Together, we can spend five whole days celebrating everything we love about musicals, whether they're on film or on the stage.

Announcing We Love Musicals Week

Ladies and gents, this is the moment you've waited for.

I'm hosting a blog party again next month, its spotlight is on musicals, and YOU are invited to participate!

Much like last year's We Love Sibling Stories Week, this party will be a celebration with many parts.  There's the blogathon-ish aspect, where you get to contribute your own posts about musicals.  There's the giveaway aspect, where I give away some fun musical-related goodies.  There's the tag aspect, where I provide a tag of ten or so questions you can answer, all about musicals.  And there's the game aspect, where I make up a blog game or two to go with this year's theme.

If you love musicals, I hope you'll join me in celebrating them for a whole week, from February 10 to 14.  There's no limit of how many people can blog about a specific topic, but I do like to get an idea for how many people will participate.  So please leave a comment here once you have an idea of what you'd like to contribute.

There's also no limit on how many posts you can contribute!  And I encourage you to think outside the box.  Movie or show reviews are great, but things like lists of favorite songs, favorite composers, specific character types you love, favorite musicals from a specific era -- those would all be awesome contributions too!  This is a party, not a blogathon, so feel free to get creative if you want to.  The main rule is just that all posts should be family friendly (even if the musical you are talking about has "mature" themes or aspects).
