Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award

Look what Emma and Ashley both tagged me with!  Thankee, Emma and Ashley :-)  I'm sorry it's taken me a couple weeks to complete this.

Rules:

1. Thank the blogger who nominated you, linking back to their site.
2. Put the Award logo on your blog.
3. Answer the ten questions sent to you.
4. Make up ten new questions for your nominees to answer.
5. Nominate ten blogs

Emma's questions:

#1 Do you like county fairs?

Yes, I do.

#2 Were you ever in some sort of club as a kid?

I was in a couple different 4-H clubs, both of them full of other homeschoolers.  That's where I met two of my current best friends, when I was 12, though we didn't become close friends for a few years.
#3 What's one of the first movies you remember seeing?

I remember watching The Sound of Music with my parents when I was pretty little.

#4 Which would you rather do: hop in your old pickup truck and go for an unexpected adventure, or sit on the back porch with a good novel on a warm summer evening?

I definitely choose the back porch with the novel.

#5 Do you enjoy live concerts?

I do!  When I was a kid, my parents belonged to the local "Community Concert Association" and we went to see lots of live concerts, mostly classical music, though I saw the Glenn Miller Orchestra that way.  When I went to college, I went to quite a few concerts, mostly small, not-well-known groups.  Cowboy took me to a Beach Boy concert when we were dating :-D  I also went to two Creed concerts in 2002, the only major rock concerts I ever went to.  And we saw Yo-Yo Ma perform with the Boston Pops when my brother and his wife lived in Boston.  Live performances have such a great energy to them, and I totally recommend them.

#6 Which do you read more of: historical fiction or contemporary fiction?

It's a toss-up.  Does stuff written in the 20th century count as historical or contemporary?

#7 Do you like country music?

Not much, but I do enjoy some of it.

#8 If you could play any role in a musical, who would you chose?

Sister Sarah in Guys and Dolls.

(Sister Sarah is the one in red here.)

#9 Do you ever put your feet up on the dashboard when riding in a car?

Not anymore.  I tried a few times as a teen, but I was always worried we'd get in a wreck and I'd break both legs.

#10 Can you tell us a funny story of something that happened to you in the last week/month/ever?

Well, Tootie (my 3-year-old) asked me, in all seriousness, what tornadoes taste like.  I thought that was pretty funny.

(Margaret O'Brien as Tootie in Meet Me in St. Louis.
Our Tootie behaves a great deal like her, hence the nickname)

Ashley's questions:

1. Do you have any nicknames? What are they?

Well... my name isn't actually Hamlette, so that's definitely a nickname.  In the Combat! fandom, I'm known as White Queen or WQ.  And Cowboy calls me Cutie -- he's the only one who is allowed to, though ;-)

2. What is your current favorite song?

As opposed to my favorite song of all time?  I have been whistling the main theme from The Quick and the Dead a lot these days because I just bought the soundtrack and am listening to it while writing.

(Russell Crowe in TQATD)

3. Have you ever traveled out of your country?

Yes, I have.  I've been to Canada lots of times, and also to Mexico, Poland, and Ukraine.

4. What is your dream job?

Earning enough money with my writing to hire someone to clean my house once in a while.

5. Pen or pencil?

Pen, particularly with blue or purple ink.

6. What is your dream college?

Small, Christian, and arts-oriented.  Which describes my alma mater, actually.

7. Do you like burritos?

Yes!  I like most Mexican-style food.

8. What is your opinion of Taco Bell?

I have many happy memories of eating at Taco Bell with my friends when we were in high school.

9. Do you have a swimming pool?

We do not own one.  However, part of our HOA fees pay for the upkeep of a very nice pool only a block from our house, so we go there a lot in the summer.

10. What is your favorite Little House book (Laura)?

Little House in the Big Woods.

(This is the edition I grew up with and still own.)

Now it's my turn!  Here are my questions:

1.  Do you like westerns?
2.  What was your favorite TV show as a child?
3.  Are there any salad dressings you dislike?
4.  Do you call carbonated beverages "soda" or "pop" or something else?
5.  What's the farthest from home you've ever been?
6.  Have you ever eaten a peanut-butter-and-onion sandwich?
7.  Do you like roller coasters?
8.  Do you subscribe to any magazines?
9.  Do you wear a wristwatch?
10.  When do you generally get up in the morning?

  1. These look like fun questions. Can I answer these questions even though I don't have a blog?

  2. Thanks for the tag! I'm just gonna answer the questions here....

    1. Do you like westerns?
Sometimes. They're not my favorite genre, but every once in a while I get into them. I like Cheyenne (but you know that :)) and Lone Ranger.
    2. What was your favorite TV show as a child?
I didn't start watching tv series 'til a few years ago so I don't have a childhood favorite.
    3. Are there any salad dressings you dislike?
    Just the weird ones.
    4. Do you call carbonated beverages "soda" or "pop" or something else?
    Soda.
    5. What's the farthest from home you've ever been?
    Probably Italy.
    6. Have you ever eaten a peanut-butter-and-onion sandwich?
No, and I hope I never do. :) (BTW, is this a random question or have you...?)
    7. Do you like roller coasters?
    YES.
    8. Do you subscribe to any magazines?
    No
    9. Do you wear a wristwatch?
    Yes
    10. When do you generally get up in the morning?
The average would be around 8, I think. I like getting up early around 5 but that doesn't work well long term as I go to bed late. :/

Fun questions -- thanks Hamlette! xx

    1. Well, if you're only gonna like a few westerns, Cheyenne and The Lone Ranger are classy picks! Endless goodness there.

Yes, I've eaten pb-and-onion sandwiches. They're rather good -- the onion gets sort of sweet and tangy at the same time, and contrasts nicely with the salty pb. They're something my dad's family made up, I think.

  3. Such fun answers! Your little girl sounds absolutely adorable. I love the questions kids come up with sometimes. I love Guys & Dolls too, although I admit to a smidgeon of guilt over it. Marlon Brando is just too gorgeous to resist!

I may answer your questions, if I might, in a couple of days. :)

    1. Yes! Do answer the questions if you want to :-) I almost tagged you, actually, but then I felt like I tag you all the time, so I didn't.

Ohhhhhhh, Marlon Brando in G&D. Hello, salty goodness!

  4. I love Sister Sarah--actually, I love everything about Guys and Dolls. I really want to go see it live someday.

  5. Awww, thanks, Hamlette! I'll answer these over here...

    1. Do you like westerns?
Yes, oh yes. Just about my favorite genre of movie.

    2. What was your favorite TV show as a child?
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.

    3. Are there any salad dressings you dislike?
I dislike most salad dressings... they ruin the flavor of the lettuce and tomatoes. I tolerate Italian and Ranch, but that's it.

    4. Do you call carbonated beverages "soda" or "pop" or something else?
Soda, but usually we call them by their brand names, ie: "Did you buy any Cherry Pepsi?" "Pour me some root beer." "I could really go for some Sprite." It's rarely generic. (You will be amused that we still call Cherry Dr. Pepper "Nick Fury" because he was on the cans back when Avengers came out.)

    5. What's the farthest from home you've ever been?
    Australia.

    6. Have you ever eaten a peanut-butter-and-onion sandwich?
No, and I would run away screaming if offered one.

    7. Do you like roller coasters?
Disneyland ones, yes. Hard core ones with huge drops? No.

    8. Do you subscribe to any magazines?
Yes. Opera News, Film Score Monthly, and Fantasy & Science Fiction magazine.

    9. Do you wear a wristwatch?
    No.

    10. When do you generally get up in the morning?
7 am, unfortunately... day job calls.

It was fun reading your answers to the two sets of questions!

    1. DKoren, I still call Cherry Dr. Peppers "Nick Furys" too! And now I call those new Dr. Pepper 10s "Thors" :-D

I'm still working on getting you to try pb&j, so I will not go near you with a pb&onion, fear not.

    2. That is so cool that the whole Nick Fury thing just stuck with those. Very funny.

If it's any consolation, M loves PB&J sandwiches. He calls them peanut butter and pizelli sandwiches!

    3. And why did Nick Fury's name stick to his, but not anyone else's? This time, someone else was on those, and I was like, "That's not right. Those are Nick Furys."

  6. Thanks, Hamlette! I'll answer my questions over here...

    1. Do you like westerns?
Erm, to be honest, the western genre has never really appealed to me (I'm sorry Hamlette! Can we still be friends?!) so I'm afraid I'm going to have to say "No". But I did enjoy 'The Magnificent Seven' when I watched it and a friend of mine once recommend 'Maverick' to me.

    2. What was your favorite TV show as a child?
When I was very little, 'The Sooty Show' :) Sweep was everyone's favourite character in it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqcinlOYIyc

    3. Are there any salad dressings you dislike?
None that I can think of right now...

    4. Do you call carbonated beverages "soda" or "pop" or something else?
    Either "Pop" or "Coke'

    5. What's the farthest from home you've ever been?
Mexico! :) That's the only long-haul trip I've ever done.

    6. Have you ever eaten a peanut-butter-and-onion sandwich?
No and I like DKoren's answer to this question! Funnily enough I used to LOVE tomato ketchup sandwiches when I was little but the thought of eating one now makes me want to throw up!

    7. Do you like roller coasters?
Certain ones, yes. I love fast rollercoasters but I hate those rides with big vertical drops :(

    8. Do you subscribe to any magazines?
    No.

    9. Do you wear a wristwatch?
I used to wear a watch but I don't bother these days since I take my phone everywhere with me.

    10. When do you generally get up in the morning?
Hahahaha! That depends if I'm working or not that day. If I'm doing a morning shift then I'd get up for around 7.30 but If I'm not then about 10. I've never been a morning person!

    1. Yes, Hannah, we can still be friends. My own brother does not enjoy most westerns. He also likes The Magnificent Seven, though!

In all fairness, your and DKoren's reaction to peanut-butter-and-onion sandwiches is the same as nearly every person I have ever met. I think Cowboy tried one once, because he's a very adventurous eater. My own mother will not countenance them.

  7. So I finally joined in! (And also kinda cheated, but that's neither here nor there.) (....right? ;) Anyway, my post should be officially up tomorrow, so check back in to see if I've ever eaten a pb&o sandwich! :D

    Anyway!

    1. Yay for back porches and good novels! That'd be my choice too.
    2. That is a VERY nice picture of Russell Crowe. The end.
    3. Do tornadoes have a taste? Hmmm. This will require more thought.
    4. So DOES stuff written in the 20th century, yet takes place in the past count as historical? Or contemporary?

Happy questions, happy answers, smiling Kara. Hope your week has been lovely! :)

    1. Hey, I quite often don't do the tagging thing either -- I figure the roles are actually more like guidelines, anyway ;-) I will check out your post in a minute or two!

Yeah, The Quick and the Dead's Cort is my favorite Russell Crowe character ever. Even beating out Captain Jack Aubrey, though just barely. Doesn't hurt that he is 100% delicious in that movie.

I've decided it counts as historical fiction if it takes place in a time previous to the one the author lived in. So Jane Austen's novels are actually contemporary in that sense, because they're set in the time period she herself lived in. Patrick O'Brian's books, even though written in the 20th century, are historical fiction because they're set long before he was alive. But that's not what "contemporary" usually means -- it means set in the modern day. I just felt like not answering the question, I think ;-)

Agree or disagree? That is the question...
