  1. TANGLED!!!!!!!!!

I wuvs that movie :-) Who's your favorite character, just out of curiosity? Mine's Pascal.

I really, really, REALLY need to see The Man From Snowy River. I'm afraid my library doesn't have it though :-/

On the plus side, I watched "October Sky" this weekend with my sister and it was beautiful.

    1. It's such a toss-up between Rapunzel and Eugene. I might love Eugene a teensy bit more. But I relate to Rapunzel more.

So The Man from Snowy River is a good movie, but most people don't understand why it's my favorite, and that's okay. I think that people assume since it's my favorite, it must be what I consider the best movie ever, but that's not true. It's just the one I love the most. (I just don't want you to watch it and be bitterly disappointed when it's simply good, not mind-smushingly fantabulous.)

I saw October Sky once very long ago, and remember nothing except Jake Gyllenhaal's lips remind me of octopus arms.

    2. Jessica, you watched October Sky! DIDN'T YOU LOVE IT?! *sigh* I adore the Rocket Boys. That's actually worked its way up to my top twenty favorites, and I only watched it like a month ago.

      (Octopus arms? Okaaaay.....)

    3. Emma Jane, I'm sorry, but it's true. I have a terribly shallow tendency to sometimes take an instant and unreasonable dislike to people (especially actors and actresses) based on the shape of their lips. Usually it's too-full bottom lips that appall me, but JG's mouth... it's just funny and weird and bothers me.

    4. Hamlette--no, that's okay, I understand! My own favorite movie (the 1988 version of "Bernadette") is not what I'd consider the best movie ever, either. It's just a GOOD movie, but one that really "speaks" to me in a very personal way, which is why I love it.

Emma--YES I LOVED OCTOBER SKY. I loved all the boys, but Homer and Quentin especially. Quentin reminds me a little of my dad as a teenager (not that I KNEW my dad as a teenager but you get the point). And Homer is absolutely adorable. Can't get enough of that smile.

I didn't notice anything weird about his mouth, but that's okay . . . Different folk have different tastes, I suppose :-)

  2. It's great fun reading through your lists!

I was excited to see The Sons of Katie Elder on there, it's just too bad that John Wayne and Dean Martin didn't make more than two films together. I love the theme music from that film! It is so powerful and fun and thrilling and inspiring all at once! One of my top 5 film themes ever. It never fails to cheer me up. Elmer Bernstein is up there with the incredible John Williams in my opinion!

    1. Annie, I agree! They were so awesome together in Katie Elder and Rio Bravo. Great rapport. It's no wonder they're both in my top 20, huh?

Elmer Bernstein is my favorite film composer, absolutely.

  3. I love so many of these (especially 'While you were Sleeping' - so romantic and so underrated!!) but the 1961 Parent Trap? It's the Lindsay Lohan version all the way!

    1. Catherine, glad you found some favorites on here! But as for The Parent Trap, I've wanted to live inside the 1961 version since I first saw it when I was about 13, but I've seen the Lindsay Lohan version once and that was more than enough. Perhaps I was just too old when I first saw it -- I was in college.

    North & South!!!!

  5. Ah, so many good ones!

Anne of Green Gables, Tangled, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Princess Bride. YES.

I'm pleasantly surprised that you added The Battle of Five Armies! So many people seem to disregard it for being too violent or unfaithful to the book, both of which are true, but there's a lot of really good scenes and lines in it too. And the scenery is beautiful.

    1. Meredith, it is a truth universally acknowledged (or it should be) that Hamlette is not a purist. And if you flip back to read my blog posts from early 2015, you'll find me gushing effusively about how much I adore TBOTFA. I went to see it 5 times in the theater because I couldn't get enough of it. Love it to bits.

  6. I really liked the second half of your list! LotR, The Hobbit, North & South, Indiana Jones, Tangled...all the good stuff! :D And I was happy to see that Toy Story and 101 Dalmatians made it onto the list. I remember loving 101 Dalmatians when I was little so that one will always hold a special place in my heart.

Also, yay for the older Parent Trap version! I haven't seen the new one, but I think I'll always be partial to the Hayley Mills version.

It was so much fun to read about your favorite films! (Because movies and lists are a glorious combo!) Maybe I'll do something like this eventually.

    1. Mary, I would love to see your list of faves some time! As I said already, heh. I love lists and I love movies :-D

Some of these, I've loved since I was in single digits. Some movies just demand lifelong adoration, I think :-) Anyway, glad you found some beloved titles!

  7. Glad to see The Avengers so high! And LOTR of course! Haven't seen The Man from Snowy River, I'll add that to my watch list, as well as the other films I have not seen yet! :)

    1. James, I think The Avengers is one of the most jewel-perfect movies I've seen :-) MFSR is a charming little movie -- I'd be intrigued to hear what you thought of it. And by all means, use this list to add to your own TBR! You're someone I can unequivocally recommend them all too.

  9. Ooohh, which ones of these have I seen...
The Man from Snowy River! (Grew up with that one. ;D It's quite fun to know that your favourite is an Australian movie. *feels proud* I like it, although admittedly, Jessica always annoyed me to no end. She was too much of a feminist for my taste. But Jim was such a darling.)
    The Magnificent Seven (!!)
    The Long Ranger
The Fellowship of the Ring (!)
    White Christmas
    The Bourne Identity (!!)
    Rio Bravo
    The Mask of Zorro
    Robin Hood
    Toy Story
    Ben-Hur
The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies (!!)
(saw a bit of this on TV last week) The Russians are coming! The Russians are coming!
    The Princess Bride
The Great Escape (LOVE the movie!)
    (most of) You've Got Mail
    101 Dalmatians
    A Knight's Tale
    Master and Commander
    Tangled (!)
    Anne of Green Gables (!!)
    North and South
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Wow, you scratched upon quite a few favourites of mine, there... ;D

    1. Miss Meg, not only does my favorite movie take place in Australia, but one of my absolute favorite TV shows does too! Five Mile Creek, a Disney show from the '80s. I am determined to visit Australia one day.

We definitely have a lot of faves in common :-D

    2. Oh, you SHOULD come to Australia! :) I don't live near the mountains or 'the snowy river' (although I have visited it on a holiday - when I was two :P) but the beaches alone are worth it, *I* think. ;) As long as you don't mind hot, humid weather, hehe. ;D (And this reminds me of that part from Support Your Local Sheriff, when he's always going on about 'well, I'm on my way to Australia!' His descriptions of a kangaroo ALWAYS make me laugh so much... ;D)

    3. Miss Meg, you see, I actually hate hot weather, and I have a great hatred of spiders as well, plus it's very far away... but one day, I will get there. Because yes, exactly -- I'm basically on my way to Australia. (And I have quoted that to my kids on occasion: "You know they have an animal there that'll box you? And carries things in its tummy...")

  10. Ah, I've seen soooo many of these. Let's see...

    The Bourne Identity
Laura (just watched this last night with Elisabeth - we'd forgotten how swoonable Dana was)
The Best Years of Our Lives
Ben-Hur (did you see the trailer for the new one?)
    Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation
    The Great Escape
    The Parent Trap
    The Adventures of Robin Hood
    Tangled
    Anne of Green Gables
    North & South
    The Last Crusade (<333333)

I love most of these movies, too, so that's great. :)

    1. Eva, you've seen so many of the good ones!

I have not seen the trailer for the new Ben-Hur. I haven't mustered up the courage. I'm also glaring in the direction of whoever thought we needed a new Mag7.

      Delete
    2. The new Ben Hur looks like a clichéd action-adventure-historical 'drama' with lots of bad CGI. Ugh. I'm not the biggest fan of the original (which is actually a re-make of another Ben Hur done in the twenties or something) mainly because I don't like Charlton Heston much, but you just CAN'T re-make a classic and expect it to be good. (With rare exceptions, like True Grit. And I've heard that Sabrina - the one with Harrison Ford - is good, too.)

I'm interested in seeing the trailer for the new Mag7 when it comes out, but I don't think I'll watch the full movie. (Unless I hear that it's super good, from people whose opinions I trust.) I heard that James Horner composed the score before he passed away so that probably means that we won't get the iconic theme. And what's Mag7 without the theme???

      Delete
    3. Eva, yeah, there's a silent version of Ben-Hur too, though I've yet to see it. The Harrison Ford Sabrina is excellent, though.

I'm trying to keep an open mind about the new Mag7 simply because it's actually a remake itself, of The Seven Samurai, and it might be cool.

  11. Squee! MORE favorites keep popping up as I scroll further down this list.

The Avengers (epic without question); The Bourne Identity (ridiculously good plus Matt Damon); The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (too much fun NOT to include); While You Were Sleeping (classic romcom charm); Anne of Green Gables (elegant and romantic in the truest sense of the word); and all of the X-Men movies, so good! Also, I'd be remiss not to mention North and South. That miniseries is beyond beautiful. :)

So fun, Rachel. Thanks for putting these lists together.

  12. WOW! I'm seriously impressed! :)

Many of your choices I absolutely love and would definitely have on my personal list but there are a lot of differences too because I haven't really seen very many classic movies to be honest. It's one of my many failings, lol.

    1. Olivia, not really. I own about 400 movies, and so it was just a matter of staring at my shelves and listing off all the ones I love best, and then putting them in order of how much I love them. The typing took more time than anything.
