Would You Like to Own the Hornblower Movies?

PLEASE NOTE:  Someone has spoken for these now, so my offer to give them away has been fulfilled.

I've loved A&E's movies about Horatio Hornblower for fifteen years.  I saw the first four in 1999, shortly after they first came out, and promptly bought the box set of them on VHS.  I bought the next two when they came out, and then the final set of two shortly before we got our first DVD player.  I've watched the first four many, many times, and the other four several times each.  I dearly love these movies -- they're dashing adventures, beautifully filmed and wonderfully acted by Ioan Gruffudd, Jamie Bamber, Robert Lindsay, and their compatriots.

And I recently found them all on DVD for a price I couldn't pass up.  Which means that now, I don't need my VHS copies.  I tried selling them at my yard sale on Saturday, but had no takers.  I would really like to pass these along to someone who either loves them already but doesn't have their own copies, or who has wanted to see these for a long time, but hasn't been able to find them for whatever reason.  Like I said, they're VHS copies, but they all play fine.

I thought about holding a drawing for these, but instead, I'm just going to give them to the first person who asks for them in the comments here.  And if no one asks for them, I'll donate them to the library for their next fundraising sale.

I'll send them for free to any US address.  If you live elsewhere in the world, I ask that you'd pay shipping for them via PayPal.

I think these were rated TV-14 for violence and some salty language.

    1. They're yours, then! Tell Emma to email me your mailing address (cuz I know she won books from my giveaway, but I didn't save her address) and I'll send them off as soon as I can get to the PO -- later this week, probably.

YAY! You are precisely the sort of home I hoped these would find :-) They deserve to be cherished!

  2. These are awesome films! :) A friend of mine slowly lent me the whole series and I fell in love with the characters completely. I couldn't resist when I got a gift voucher for my birthday at Amazon to buy the whole set... They're absolute classics. :)

    1. Aren't they wonderful? I remember your great reviews of them for the Period Drama Challenge. I've recently started following another blog called Fiction Predilection that's been doing really thorough, in-depth reviews of the whole series.

Classics is a good word for them! Have you ever seen the Gregory Peck version, Captain Horatio Hornblower? It's really great as well, and I love that you could actually imagine Ioan's HH growing up into GP's. They have a lot of similar mannerisms and such.

    2. No, I haven't seen that version... In fact, I'd forgotten about it until you mentioned it! :) I do want to find it and watch it as Gregory Peck is a fantastic actor. :)

  4. These are WONDERFUL movies. Glad you found a great price, Hamlette - I need to start shopping for the DVD's as well because it's been too long since I've seen them and they're well worth owning.

    1. The "collector's edition" of all 8 movies together in one set that I got is $25 at Amazon right now, a little more at B&N's website. They were on sale for like $20 when I got them. Aren't they magnificent? I can't wait for my kids to be old enough to get into them too :-)

  5. I haven't seen any of these actually. But have heard of them and certainly intrigued! Since you rate them so highly, I'll have to make a bigger effort to find myself some copies to watch. :)

    1. Oh. My. Goodness. You really haven't seen these? But... but... but... they're so delicious! Ioan Gruffudd is so young and adorable and sweet and wonderful and stalwart and did I mention handsome and wonderful? I hope you can find them to watch! I know Netflix had them for a while, and might still. Or check libraries! Libraries have them, often.

Seriously, if you like period dramas at all, find them. Find them!

  6. I love this series! I got them for Christmas last year after having watched them and really loving them! They are such good movies. I also think that it's really sad if you haven't seen them. They're classics!

    1. They really are excellent from all standpoints, aren't they? Acting, writing, costumes, sets, locations -- all marvelous. Definitely modern classics!
