20 Things You Might Not Know About Me

Kara from Flowers of Quiet Happiness has tagged me in this list thingie that's been going around the blogosphere lately.  Here are my answers!

Question 1: How tall are you?  5'7"

Question 2: Do you have a hidden talent? If so, what?  I'm very, very good at keeping secrets.

Question 3: What’s your biggest blog-related pet peeve?  I actually refuse to follow any blog that does not provide a way for me to navigate their old posts.  If there's no "labels" or "archive" section anywhere, I can't see if you've ever written about anything else that might interest me.  And I don't have time to hit "previous post" over and over and over.

Question 4: What’s your biggest non-blog related pet peeve?  Cereal bags that are hard to open.

Question 5: What’s your favorite song?  "Mack the Knife," any version sung by Bobby Darin.

Question 6: What’s your favorite Etsy shop that isn’t yours?  I've bought more things from The Ring and the Lion than any other store.  The owner has made me a lot of custom LOTR-related items, and I've also randomly bought things she's made that have struck my fancy.

Question 7: What’s your favorite way to spend your free time when you’re alone?  Not being interrupted.  It's a rare privilege.

Question 8: What’s your favorite junk food?  Cheetos and Oreos.  Not at the same time, though.

Question 9: Do you have a pet or pets? If so, what kind and what are their names?  We currently have a purple Betta fish named Winter.

Question 10: What are your number one favorite nonfiction and fiction books?  Nonfiction would be the Bible.  Fiction would be Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte.

Question 11: What’s your favorite beauty product?  Pantene conditioner.

Question 12: When were you last embarrassed? What happened?  I felt mildly embarrassed on Sunday when I started explaining the craft to all the moms and little kids in Sunday school, and no one paid any attention because I was talking too quietly.

Question 13: If you could only drink one beverage (besides water) for the rest of your life, what would it be?  Coca-cola.

Question 14: What’s your favorite movie?  The Man from Snowy River.

Question 15: What were you in high school: prom queen, nerd, cheerleader, jock, valedictorian, band geek, loner, artist, prep?  I was homeschooled K-12, but in college, I was in the writerly group, on the fringe of the theatre group, and friends with lots of the artists.  Nerdly, vehemently non-preppy, unarguably non-jock.

Question 16: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?  I love my house, so here is good.

Question 17: PC or Mac?  PC.

Question 18: Last romantic gesture from a crush, date, boy/girlfriend, spouse?  My husband kissed me on the nose when I said good night to him.  He has a cold, so he went to bed early, and also kissed my nose instead of my lips so he wouldn't spread germs.  Even though I had the cold already.

Question 19: Favorite celebrity?  Hugh Jackman.  He reminds me a lot of myself, actually.

Question 20: What blogger do you secretly want be best friends with?  If by that you mean, "What blogger(s) would you like to meet in real life because you think you could be real life friends too," then Kara and Heidi :-)  EDIT:  And Joanna!  How did I forget Joanna?  Oops!  Let's blame it on Hugh Jackman distracting me with his kind smile.

  1. Jane Eyre again...I'm getting anxious to read that one. Maybe I'll read it after Silmarillion. I'm looking forward to that more than Wuthering Heights, because I *think* Jane Eyre has a happy ending.

    1. I hate depressing endings. (Depressing is different from sad.) JE ends well. WH is depressing all the way through.

    2. How did I not add you to my answer for #20? I meant to, and then... I see now that I didn't. So I've fixed that. Just so you know :-)

    3. Well, thanks! As I read it, I thought, "I think I would like to meet her in real life." You're pretty much all-around awesome. :-) I might do the tag, since I finally did the Sunshine Award. Your cowboy vs. pirate question threw me a bit, but I recovered nicely. ;-)

    4. Awww, thanks! That's lovely to hear.

My hubby used to tease me that I should write a book about vampire pirate cowboys because then I could have everything that intrigues me all in one book :-D Maybe that's why I like the movie The Big Country so well -- it's about a sea captain who becomes a rancher.

    5. Hey, if you write that book now, you could make a lot of money. Vampires seem to be all the rage... ;-)

    6. Hee. I did actually start writing a vampire western mystery once.

I remember with the first POTC movie came out and you could get t-shirts that said "Pirates are the new vampires." Those amused me greatly.

  2. Did you ever watch "Snowy River: The McGregor Saga" on television? I grew up with it, and it was fabulous. I was actually introduced to it first, so it was a bit of a jump for me to watch "The Man From Snowy River" and see a YOUNG Matt McGregor, without a passel of kids!

    1. I haven't seen a single episode because we didn't get cable when I was a kid, and it's kind of hard to find on DVD/VHS. I know it has some people I'm very fond of in it, guest starring and such (::cough:: Hugh Jackman ::cough::), but it just has never crossed my path. Maybe I should see if I can watch any eps online...

    2. It's sooo frustrating that you can't get it in the US. I had to import the set from Australia, and use a hacked DVD player to watch it. :P

Aww, yeah, Hugh Jackman was in... season one? He was cute. Actually, lots of Aussies who are now famous started out on that show.

Wish I could help you get your hands on a copy, but I'm not sure I could copy an Aussie disk and turn it into a US disk. I could try!

    3. Aww, thanks for the offer! I know I can buy grey-market copies if I ever want to. A few episodes are available on Amazon, so maybe I'll try them that way and see if I like them, before I buy a whole set. There are a couple of grey-market providers I trust, so I'll see if they have it.

    4. I hope you like them, if you get to see them.

I will warn you, though -- Matt is a widower in the series. Wasn't sure if that would bother you (being a fan of the movie, and thinking she's dead) or not -- like I said, I saw the series first so it didn't bother me. :)

    5. I think that, since it's different actors and the character has a different name (it's Jim Craig in the movie -- he's never named in the original poem), it won't bother me too much, but thanks for the warning!

  3. Ah, yes, The Man from Snowy River...since you were 2 years old, right? I remember! I think I mentioned to you that my daughter has the piano music to that movie. Wow! So beautiful! I love to listen to her play it.

Bobby Darin is a huge fave of mine as well, and I do love "Mack the Knife."

It's great that you are content right where you are. I have spent far too many years of my life wishing I lived elsewhere. Basically, in the last 14 years, I've probably been content where I am a total of 48 months (that's 4 years!). So for 10 of the last 14 years, I've been unhappy and discontent. Thankfully, I've come to the realization that unless I want to waste another decade of my life, I need to make the choice to bloom where I am planted. Really, there are worse places to live than Boise, Idaho!

    Blessings on your day,
    Patti

    1. Yup, I was about 2 1/2 when I saw it in the theater. A lifetime of love for that movie. I'm touched you remember! I have some of the sheet music too, and have had the main theme memorized on piano since I was 11. The soundtrack is the first CD I ever bought, and it was playing when all three of my children were born.

I remember you like Bobby too :-) Have you heard of The Milk Shows? I just got the CDs by that name, a collection of short song-bits he sang on a radio show for a couple years. Sponsored by the milk board of America or something.

Contentment is tough, isn't it? I was definitely not contented in our last two homes, so I spent about four years longing to be anywhere but where we were. Thank the Lord that's behind me! Not a pleasant way to live. I'm glad you're finding contentment too :-)

  5. Yay! so glad you joined in! And I'm loathe to admit that I haven't seen The Man from Snowy River :O. But I'll check out my netflix and hopefully it's on there and then I can remedy that!

    1. Netflix had TMFSR earlier this year, as my bff got it from them and watched it with me on my birthday :-)

  6. I was smiling about #20 as well! SO agree with that! (And we could actually make that happen now. Oh the possibilities! :)

Ah, The Man From Snowy River. Such a great movie. Haven't seen it in ages though. I need to find me a copy.... My roommate in CA had one, so I never had to worry about it before.

And now you've also got me curious. What connects you and Hugh Jackman? You said he reminds you of yourself....

    1. It's true, we could! Maybe sometime this fall? Before all the holiday busyness sets in?

As for me and Hugh Jackman... um. Well. This gets pretty personal and maybe a little weird, so just bear with me. Or quit reading, lol.

Some friends and I decided to figure out if we were a movie star, who would we be? Like, what actor or actress do we most relate to as far as what roles they take, how they play those roles, what little we know of their personalities in real life, etc. And after several days of consideration, I realized I really relate to Hugh Jackman. Like, when you read interviews with him, the interviewers are always going on and on about how he's very polite toward absolutely everyone, and very giving to his fans, and just generally as nice as possible. And that's how I try to be, polite and helpful and nice. Also, a lot of the characters he plays, if I was a guy, I would absolutely want to play them. Wolverine, The Drover, Leopold, Curly, and so on.

And then a few days later, I realized that that is why I had such a visceral reaction to The Prestige. I went to see that movie in the theater all pumped up, cuz, woo! New Hugh Jackman movie! And then it got dark, and darker, and more and more disturbing, and I came out of that movie feeling like I'd been sucker punched repeatedly. Because of what Hugh's character does. And it's not even as bad as what Christian Bale does, but what Hugh does -- it freaked me out. To the point that I could not stand to listen to my "Oklahoma!" soundtrack, could not bear to watch any Hugh Jackman movies for months. It was over a year, really, before I finally got past it and could watch any X-men movies or have anything to do with him. Which was heart-rending, because I love him as Wolvie so, so much.

Well, last year, when I realized I relate to Hugh Jackman, it hit me that that is why I was so bothered by The Prestige. Because I identify with him, and seeing him play a character that was willing to go down such a dark and twisted road repelled me so very much because subconsciously it made me wonder if, if he could play someone like that, could I? If he could bring that darkness, what about me?

And once I realized that, it was like, "POOF!" After 7 years, I was actually totally fine about The Prestige. I get why it freaked me out, so now it doesn't freak me out anymore.

And then I started getting interested by MBTI typing, and what sorts of things I could learn about myself by looking at different facets of my personality and stuff. I am an ISFJ, very strongly so. And one day, I did some googling to see what Hugh Jackman's been typed as. And the first few that popped up all type him as an ESFJ, basically the extroverted version of my personality type. Which is hilarious and cool :-)

And yes, I look at things he does in his life and go, "I could see me doing that." Marry someone considerably older than me? I tend to dig older guys (except my actual husband, who's younger than me). Adopt kids? We have talked a lot about adoption, and might someday do it yet. Start a coffee and chocolate company? I would love to own a coffee house.

Um, so, yes, there you have it. Hugh Jackman reminds me of me. Maybe I should make all that into an actual blog post.
