Join My Piratical Blogathon!

Avast, me hearties!  Belay that racket and give a listen!  Stop yer bung holes before I keelhaul ye and...

...sorry.  It's just that I love pirates.  Fictional pirates, anyway.  And ever since I was a little kid, I've been fascinated by historical pirates like Captain Kidd and Blackbeard, too.  So for a while now, I've been considering hosting some kind of pirate event on my blog, and I've finally decided that I want to host my very first blogathon!  Next month, on September 19, which is International Talk Like A Pirate Day, in case you didn't know.  (And if you didn't, why didn't you?  Arrrrrr!)

How does a blogathon work, you ask?  Well, it's a cooperative thing.  Lots of different bloggers all post about something related to one topic or theme on their own blogs on the same day.  And then someone (me, in this case) compiles a list linking to all the different blog posts, and everyone goes and reads everyone else's posts, and it be a fine way to spend a few days while ye're marooned someplace.

For this blogathon, you can post about anything pirate-related, whether it's a book review or movie review, a discussion of costumes in various pirate movies, something historical about real pirates, a comparison of different pirate movies or books -- totally up to you!  You just have to sign up for your topic here any time, and then remember to post about it on September 19th.  I'll do the hard work of linking everyone's posts to the main post here on my blog on that day, you don't even have to fill out a Linky box or anything!

If you love pirates (fictional or real), leave a comment on this post saying what kind of post(s) you'd like to contribute.  I'll add it to this master list so everyone can see what's already being written about.  And yes, I'll be writing at least one post for this myself :-)  I know this is giving you more than a month's warning, but I figure you might need time to read a book or get your hands on a movie and watch it.

A Piratical Blogathon Master List

Hamlette -- movie review of The Black Swan
Hayden -- Arabella Bishop, forgotten heroine from Captain Blood
Hannah -- movie review of Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists
DKoren -- movie review of Cutthroat Island
Lydia -- female pirates
James -- movie review of The Princess Bride
S.W. -- movie review of Captain Blood
Heidi -- movie review of The Sea Hawk
Eowyn -- movie review of Yankee Buccaneer
Lynn M. -- movie review of Treasure Island (1990)
Hannah -- book review of Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
Carissa -- review of Pirates of Penzance
Kara -- book review of Pirates and Prejudice by Kara Louise

Here are a bunch of buttons I created for this, perfect for your blog's sidebar.  Please also consider writing a quick "look what's coming!" post on your own blog to spread the news -- I'd like to gather as large a crew of scurvy bilge rats participants as I can!  Copy the code under the buttons to put them in your sidebar or use them with a blog post.  You can also copy the bigger versions I used above to put them in a blog post.

  1. oooh! I was actually planning on doing a Forgotten Heroines post on Arabella Bishop from Captain Blood, so I can arrange to post it on that day, if you'd like. :D

  2. You know what, why not? :D I can do a review of 'Pirates! In An Adventure with Scientists'. I love that movie!

    1. Huzzah! I'm still tweaking the post to get the buttons working, and I have two participants already! :-D Oh, this is going to be fun!

  3. I suppose I could muster something up on Pirates of the Caribbean, considering it's my favorite film. ;)

    1. A review of POTC: Curse of the Black Pearl? I'll put you down for that, and can change it if you say otherwise. (For instance, a study of the MBTI types in the movie is different from a review...)

    2. Likely a review, but I'll let you know when I know for sure. Often, I start writing something and the tone changes on me as it progresses. :)

  4. I would love to do this! Only I don't have a lot of followers....but if you'll let me I would love to do a post on female pirates.....

    1. Who cares how many followers you have? This is about celebrating pirates (um, yes) and having fun. You're in!

  5. Arg, this sounds like a great idea! I will have to put a little more thought into it, but I am thinking about making a list of top fictional pirates!

    1. Aye, that be a fun idea! I'll put ye down for that, and if ye should change yer mind, let me know. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

    2. Yep, Top 10 Fictional Pirates is what I will be going for. Also, if I post a pirate related review on Monday, can you also post the link on your post Tuesday along with my list post? I think I am going to review Space Pirate Captain Harlock.

    3. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeell... the point of a blogathon is to have all the posts pop up on the same day, but I might be willing to make an exception ;-)

  6. Ahoy there! This looks to be mighty fun sport. :D How does a review of Captain Blood (1935) sound?

    1. Sounds good! Just be aware that Hayden is doing a post all about Arabella Bishop from that movie. But a review of the movie as a whole should be totally different, so I'll put you on the list!

    2. Oh, well if you'd rather I'd be just as happy writing a review of Princess Bride... Then there'd be a bit more variety. What d'you think? :) (I really don't mind which.)

    3. Up to you! I do think they'd be different, just wanted you to be aware someone else will be talking about it too. But a movie like Captain Blood can probably stand more than one person talking about it!

However... The Princess Bride is one of my most favoritest movies, so if you felt like doing it instead/also, I will not be sad!

  7. I'm in! For a movie review of Sea Hawk. ;-)

  8. I'd love to join in with a review of the 1951 "Double Crossbones"!

  9. Awh, considering I'm still writing my Tolkien post for your birthday-party-of-great-significance (something like that), I won't have time to do this. Pooh. I think I'll just enjoy reading everyone else's posts. This is a great excuse for a POTC marathon, though. ;-)

    1. Yeah, the main reason it took me like a year to decide to host this is because it's so close to Sept. 22 and the kickoff for my Tolkien party. But really ITLAPD is the only logical day to have it, so that's the reason this is a blogathon and not a party.

But anyway, blogathons need readers too! :-) And oooh, a marathon does sound fun. I haven't seen 2, 3, or 4 since they were in theaters....

  10. This sounds like fun, but I don't think I'll have time to do it. I've had such a busy month (I'm sure you noticed I haven't been posting much). Do you have some pirate book suggestions, and I'll see if I can squeeze one in?

    1. What about Treasure Island? I'm actually a bit disappointed no one's reviewing the book or any of the movie versions yet. And it's not long.

      Delete
    2. Okay, I'll see what I can do! Go ahead and put me down for a book review of Treasure Island. I'll try to let you know asap if I find out I can't, so someone else can grab it.

  11. Hi! I'm fairly new to your blog- and to blogging, to be perfectly honest- but I'd love to do a review of the 1990 made-for-TV movie of Treasure Island.

  13. Okay, very late to the game. And I'd love to join, but....I'm coming up blank on ideas. Any suggestions of another book (besides the one you mentioned on my blog I mean) I could read and review? Or perhaps I should do something different....... Hmmmmm. Let me think on it a little. (But only a little, I know! That date isn't very far away.)

    1. Nobody's doing anything involving any version of Peter Pan yet. That's all that pops in my head at the moment -- I'll come back with something more later this evening, I'm sure :-)

    2. Okay, I'm back. What about Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson? It's a totally awesome book -- kind of a chunk, but it's YA, so it goes really fast.

I found this list of classic pirate books, if you want to see if any of them are free for your Kindle/Nook. The only ones on that list I've read are Treasure Island, Kidnapped (which I don't recall involving many pirates), and "The Gold Bug." Oh, I think I've read Defoe's General History of Pyrates too, long ago.

The Wine-Dark Sea is one of Patrick O'Brian's books about Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin, and it involves pirates. It's book 16 in the series, though, and it's been years since I read them, so I don't remember if you'd feel lost if you hadn't read the previous 15 books. Really, if you've seen Master and Commander, you'd probably be fine. I really love that series.

What book did I mention on your blog? The one I'm reading? Or was it Pirate King by Laurie R. King? It's one of her Sherlock Holmes & Mary Russell mysteries and great fun.

      Delete
    3. Actually... I don't think I'm going to manage a review of Pirates and Prejudice after all -- I really don't think I'm going to get it done in time, so I'm switching mine to a movie review. Would you like to review that book instead, since you're already a fan of the author?

      Delete
    4. Hey, now I like that plan! Count me in. I'll review it on that day. But I do hope it won't be a problem if I'm unable to visit or comment much on that exact day? Most likely won't get internet access until the next day. :)

Thanks for sharing your idea! I'll definitely take advantage of your limited time. ;) And also, I appreciate all the suggestions. I was coming up completely blank.

      Delete
    5. Okay, I have you down for Pirates and Prejudice :-)

And nope, not a problem -- as long as your post is up on the correct day, it's all good. I've participated in several blogathons, and it sometimes takes me weeks to read all the posts and comment on them. Real life happens!

  14. Hamlette - Would it be fine with you if I switch from "Double Crossbones" to "Yankee Buccaneer"?

  15. I may or may not be able to do this. I've had company for the last 48 hours, and am leaving on my trip tomorrow. I don't post anything that I'm not happy with, so if my brain is functioning after my guests leave this afternoon, I'll schedule it to post. If not, I'll let you know.

    1. Okay! I can always pull you off the list if need be. Do let me know, as either I or a friend of mine could probably review POTC:TCOTBP if you don't.
