It's true! Olivia of Meanwhile, in Rivendell..., Heidi of Along the Brandywine, and I are reviving the Legends of Western Cinema Week blog celebration! We're holding it July 21-27, and you are hereby invited.
Do you love western movies? Do you like western movies? Do you kind of fondly tolerate western movies? This blog celebration is for you! We welcome you whether you adore the genre, enjoy just a few cowboy films, or fall somewhere in the middle of that spectrum.
What will this week entail? I'm so glad you asked. Heidi, Olivia, and I have some splendid things in the works. Like what? Multiple giveaways. Blog games. A tag. Top ten lists. Movie reviews.
Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut... the truth is, we don't want to celebrate with only each other. We want to celebrate with YOU too! You can sign up in the comments on any of the announcement posts of the three host blogs with your ideas for what you'd like to add to this shindig.
How can you contribute? Any way you can dream up! Movie reviews, character sketches, a list of your favorite western films, a long rhapsody about celluloid cowboys... it's really up to you.
Multiple posts from the same blogger? Totally welcome. More than one person reviewing the same movie? Why not? This isn't a blogathon, it's a party.
If you can't think of anything to post, fear not! We're working on a splendid tag with 9 questions you can answer on your own blog. That totally counts as partying.
Olivia made us these fabulous buttons, so please
Yay!!!!! I've missed this :D
ReplyDeleteAnd now you have a blogggggggg!
DeleteTruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuue! :D :D
DeleteI love westerns. I'm just about to change up the posters in my stairwell to reflect that love.
ReplyDeleteI have a March blog piece on The Arizonian and its remake The Marshal of Mesa City which might be appropriate to share. I can always be inspired. And I can be dragged to any party with cowboy hats.
Caftan Woman, very cool! My whole living room is cowboy-movie-themed.
DeleteAre those posts you've already posted, or new ones you're working on? I think new posts are more what we're thinking for the party.
But a cool post you could do would be to round up all your reviews of westerns and do a list linking to all of them -- I'm thinking of doing that, if I can find the time. Would be a fun way to let people access lots of your thoughts on westerns...
I was thinking at first about the one from March to share. In 11 years of blogging, there are a lot of western titles. A round up is probably in order at this point. However, there are still so many more to write about, so I could probably bring a couple of new titles to the festivities as well.
DeleteI'm certainly looking forward to the week of July 21 - 27.
Caftan Woman, it's definitely going to be a fun week! Looking forward to your contribution(s) :-)
DeleteSo looking forward to celebration week. I have a round up of posts, with links to two which may be of interest. A double-bill look at Jesse James and The Return of Frank James. Plus, a piece on the first three Hopalong Cassidy movies. I will spread them out or post to a schedule, if that is desired.
DeleteYay!!! This'll be wonderful. I'm so glad you ladies are joining me.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you invited me to co-host, Olivia!
DeleteI would so love to join, but I'm going to be off of the internet for that whole week!! Oh man. But, I'll love reading everyone's entries, and maybe I'll fill out the tag when I am back online. :-)
ReplyDeleteMC, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! That's terrible! Maybe you could schedule a post in advance? And yeah, you can always join in after the fact :-)
Delete*screaming because I'm going to be in the States that week with absolutely no way to participate*
ReplyDeleteI mean, I guess I could schedule a post but it just won't be the same. :(
Eva, stop screaming right now and put your thinking cap on and figure out a way to participate, such as hijacking someone else's laptop or tablet or phone for a week.
DeleteI miiiiight be able to use Mom's phone to participate in the quizzes and giveaways and such. I AM going to try!
DeleteI'm thinking that if I do schedule a blog post, I might write it on 'favorite westerns that aren't exactly westerns'. Would that still fit with the party?
Eva, totally!
DeleteBy "westerns that aren't exactly westerns" do you mean like musicals set on the frontier (like Seven Brides for Seven Brothers) and Australia-set movies (like The Man from Snowy River)? Tell me what you're thinking!
Okay, so right now I have two really solid picks in my head - 'No Country for Old Men' and 'Hidalgo' - and a bunch of maybes. Like 'Friendly Persuasion', 'Seven Brides'...stuff like that. So would that work for a Western Cinema party or is it too broad and I should pick something else?
DeleteEva, yup! That makes sense to me. Things that have the frontier or western-USA setting, but aren't quite cowboy movies. We're pretty wide open on this thing, so I say it counts!
DeleteGreat! :) Looking forward to it...
DeleteI definitely want to review Wanted: Dead or Alive, but maybe a character sketch on Josh Randall as well?? We'll see.
ReplyDeleteThis is so exciting!! :D
OH. I just watched Shane and it was so good!! I knew there was a Western I watched recently that I was forgetting...I know Shane is a favorite story of yours, right?
DeleteYippee!!! *figuratively throwing hat in the air and dancing round in confetti*
DeleteSO excited! :D
(Ok, trying really hard to think of something else but I guess that's all I had to say. Have to go chase after the toddler who's carrying my baby plants all around. ;D)
Natalie, YAY! I adore W:DOA and Josh Randall. Like, seriously one of The Best TV Shows Of All Time. The way they could pack a huge story into less than 30 minutes! Is astonishing!
DeleteAlso, um, yeah, so, I do adore Shane. Just re-read the book this month. And the movie has basically All My Favorite Feels. YOU MUST TELL ME what you thought of Alan Ladd!!!!!
Heidi, me too! I'm going to watch a western tonight in preparation.
DeleteHamlette,
DeleteYes! Us too. ;)
(And btw, glad you figured out my comment... I was trying to leave it as a new comment not as a reply. for some reason I can only leave comments off my phone right now which already tends to act in a ridiculous manner. :p I know it's a problem on my end though not yours so no worries
Heidi, phone commenting gets wonky for me too. No worries indeed.
DeleteOoh fun!! I've been wanting to do a post on The Magnificent Seven for a long time, this might be a good excuse...
ReplyDeleteMegan, YES! Perfect! One of the giveaway prizes happens to involve that very movie, which I consider the best western of all time, so, yeah! Do it!
DeleteThis looks so fun! I'll have to get Anna to actually write something for this event... ;D Both Anna and I are very much in the 'LOVE WESTERNS' category, so this blog party is just our cup of tea :D
ReplyDeleteAnna and Irene, YAY! So happy to have you aboard :-) Westerns are just so delicious, aren't they? Can't wait to see what you come up with for this!
DeleteYes, they definitely are. Besides writing a movie review, I might just do an ode to westerns or something ;)
DeleteAnna & Irene, that sounds great!
DeleteOh YES! I was hoping this event, or something like it, would be back! Not sure what I want to write about yet, but I definitely want to get in on it.
ReplyDeleteElisabeth, oh good! I'm excited that you're joining us :-) Can't wait to see what you come up with!
DeleteIncidentally, about the giveaways—who's doing them? Just the hosts, or if participants want to do a giveaway of their own, is that okay?
ReplyDeleteWe hosts are each giving things away, though we haven't quite sorted out yet if we're doing a joint thing with many prizes or each our own or what. BUT I'd say that any participant wanting to host their own giveaway for the event is a Wonderful Person and should be encouraged! So if you've got an idea of something related to western movies, have at it!
DeleteI don't have a blog but I hope you don't mind if I make some suggestions. Speaking of westerns that aren't exactly westerns I can of think of two(really three). The DISNEY movie THE APPLE DUMPLING GANG with BILL BIXBY, DON KNOTTS and TIM CONWAY. (There was a sequel with KNOTTS & CONWAY but I didn't care for it much.) Also from Disney-OLD YELLER with DOROTHY MCGUIRE, TOMMY KIRK and KEVIN CORCORAN.(I just remembered later there was SAVAGE SAM who was the son of Old Yeller. It had KIRK & CORCORAN again. This time BRIAN KEITH was added as their uncle.) So I came up with four movies-all Disney. Classic TV Fan
ReplyDeleteClassic TV Fan, those are definitely good suggestions!
DeleteOoooh weeee! So glad I caught this banner ( on Caftan Woman's blog of course ). Put me down for several pieces because I LOVE westerns...and sadly, rarely write about them. This will help remedy that. - Constance ( Silver Scenes )
ReplyDeleteConstance, YAY! So eager to see what you come up with to contribute!
DeleteI'm still toying with ideas but I will definitely do write-ups on "Tribute to a Bad Man" ( 1956 ) and "Gun Glory" ( 1957 )...two favorites. I would love to write about Germany's western series Winnetou but I haven't watched all the films yet, so that may not happen!
DeleteConstance, oooooOOOooooo! I can't wait to read your take on Tribute to a Bad Man cuz Vic Morrow is in it :-) I saw it once, long ago, but barely remember it. Haven't seen Gun Glory, so that will be interesting too.
DeleteI suspect we'll try to make this an annual shindig again like it used to be, so you can always write up Winnetou (which I've totally never heard of) next time around!
I look forward to seeing what everyone can come up with!
ReplyDeleteA few days ago I sent a note to my local theatre (who were looking for classic movie suggestions) encouraging them to think Alan Ladd :) fingers crossed - VT
VT, awww, that's awesome! I should see if I can convince the art house theater here to play something of his.
DeleteI'd love to take part, can I do Wyatt Earp (1994), The Fastest Gun Alive (1956), The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (1972), The Long Riders (1980) Invitation to a Gunfighter (1964), In Old Oklahoma (1943) and Open Range (2003)?
ReplyDeleteMerciful Zeus! MovieRob, you can do any or all of those, with my blessing!
Delete7 days of a blogathon deserve 7 movies :)
DeleteI won't argue with that, Rob!
DeleteWhat fun! I'd love to join in! I'll get busy planning a giveaway or selecting a film, TV show or soundtrack to review--and I'll be back in the next few days to let you know what it is! There is such a wide grand field to choose from in the western cinema world. I"m looking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteAnnie, how wonderful! I'm so happy to have you involved. Can't wait to see what you come up with!
DeleteI'd like to review "The Big Country" soundtrack (Gregory Peck's western). I'll post it on Monday!
DeleteIf I can squeeze out a little extra writing time I'd also like to add a review of "Comanche Station" (1960) and a giveaway later on in the week!
How does that sound? I'm greatly looking forward to reading all the contributions!
Annie, that sounds great! I ADORE that soundtrack. In fact, I have both the one-disc version and the two-disc expanded version. Can't get enough of it.
DeleteAnything you have time for is great! We're very flexible with this event :-)
