"Silent Night" is 200 Years Old. Today.
"Silent Night" was first performed on December 24, 1818. That's 200 years ago, today. I know you needed to know this, so I'm telling you. You're welcome ;-)
"Silent Night" is a special song to me! My parents didn't become Christians until I was about 3, and at the time my mother didn't really know any hymns or Christian songs-except for Christmas ones. So, since she wanted to sing to us about Jesus, "Silent Night" was her go-to lullaby song she'd sing to us every night before bed. It has such lovely memories associated with it, and I always feel peaceful (and a bit sleepy!) whenever I hear it. :)
Hayden, that's so cool! It works beautifully as a lullaby. I sang "Away in a Manger" to my kids a lot when they were littler for a lullaby, which is also technically a Christmas song, but hey.

That's awesome that it was 200 years ago today! I did not know that!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite version is this Gaelic one by Enya:

Jessica, I hadn't heard that one before! How lovely. Thanks for sharing it! I haven't heard much by Enya since leaving college.
DeleteI'm glad you liked it!! Isn't Enya wonderful?
DeleteJessica, I must admit I enjoy Enya as background noise or in small doses, but am not what you'd call a fan.
DeleteThat is incredible. It is such a beautiful song!
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite versions is the Cherish the Ladies:

Thanks for sharing that one, MC! I hadn't heard it before either. Very pretty :-)
DeleteI like all of these. I usually prefer Dean Martin -- but for this song, I have to put Bing at the top, followed by Elvis, then Deano and Darin.
ReplyDeleteStanley, I won't argue with that rating!
