A Period Drama Tag

Rachel at A Girl's Place tagged me with this recently.  Thanks, Rachel!  (You have a great name, by the way.  Just sayin'.)

1. What's your favorite Period Drama movie?

It's also my favorite movie of all time:  The Man from Snowy River (1982), which is set in the Australian Outback sometime in the Victorian era, I'm guessing 1890s.  I've reviewed the film here, and also wrote about it here.

2. What's your favorite Period Drama series?

The Granada Sherlock Holmes starring Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes, and first David Burke and then Edward Hardwicke as Dr. Watson.  It is beautifully done -- such attention to detail, such love for the original stories!  And Brett is by far the most Holmes-like Holmes I have ever seen.

3. Which Period Drama do you dislike the most?

I don't know?  I don't keep track of movies and shows I dislike, really.  Hmmm.  Thinking.  Okay, I really don't like The Wild Bunch (1969) at all, so let's go with that.

4. Anne of Green Gables or Little Dorrit?

Anne!  Always Anne.

5. Your favorite Period Drama dresses?

I love just about every dress in White Christmas (1954), especially these:

6. Who's your favorite Period Drama character? (Okay, pick at least five)

Sherlock Holmes, as portrayed by Jeremy Brett in the aforementioned Granada series, Nicholas Rowe in The Young Sherlock Holmes (1985), and Benedict Cumberbatch in the BBC's Sherlock (2010-) (Yes, I know the latter is not a period drama, but it IS one of my favorite portrayals, and I must include him).

Jane Eyre, as portrayed both by Zelah Clarke (1983) and Ruth Wilson (2006).

Robin Hood, as portrayed by Errol Flynn (1938), Richard Todd (1952), and the animated version voiced by Brian Bedford (1973).

Zorro/Diego, as portrayed by Tyrone Power (1940), Guy Williams (1957-59), and Duncan Regehr (1990-93).

The Lone Ranger/John Reid, as portrayed by Clayton Moore in the TV series (1949-57) and Armie Hammer in the new film (2013).

7. If you could join a royal ball, which dress would you wear? (Pick a Period Drama dress)

Since it is my life's ambition to be a fairy godmother, I choose this dress from Cinderella (2015):

8. What's your favorite Jane Austen movie?

Emma (1996), with Gwyneth Paltrow.  It's one of my less-favorite Austen novels, but man alive, do I love that movie.

9. Downton Abbey or Call the Midwife

I've seen like 5 eps of Downton Abbey and none of Call the Midwife, so... neither.

10. Sybil Crawley, Jenny Lee, Emma Woodhouse or Marian of Knighton?

Even though she's probably my least-favorite Austen heroine, I'm gonna have to go with Emma Woodhouse on this one.  What I've seen of DA hasn't impressed me with Sybil (though I liked her better than Mary), and if we're talking the Marian from the BBC Robin Hood, I'm honestly not a fan of her either.  Haven't seen Jenny Lee, so yup, going with Emma.

11. Which couples of a Period Drama do you like the most? (Pick at least four)

Jane Eyre (Zelah Clarke) and Edward Rochester (Timothy Dalton) of Jane Eyre (1983).

Anne Shirley (Megan Follows) and Gilbert Blythe (Jonathon Crombie) of Anne of Green Gables (1985).

John Thornton (Richard Armitage) and Margaret Hale (Daniela Denby-Ashe) of North & South (2004).

Ringo (John Wayne) and Dallas (Claire Trevor) of Stagecoach (1939).

12. And last, which Period Drama villain do you like the most?

So here's the thing... I almost never *like* villains.  I mean, I can count on one hand the villains I actually like.  Happily, some of them are actually from period dramas!  Including my favorite, namely Ben Wade (Glenn Ford) from 3:10 to Yuma (1957), which I reviewed here.

Okay, this doesn't say you need to tag anyone, but I'm going to tag a few people because I'm curious to see their answers:

Annie of The Western Desk
Birdie of Lady of the Manor
Cordy of Write on, Cordy!
DKoren of Sidewalk Crossings
Eva of Coffee, Classics, and Craziness
Heidi of Along the Brandywine
Kara of Flowers of Quiet Happiness
Miss March of Sunshiny Corner
Rose of An Old-Fashioned Girl
Quiggy of The Midnite Drive-In (but you don't have to choose a ball gown -- maybe men's formalwear instead?)

Play if you want to!  (And if I didn't tag you and you want to play, go ahead!)

  1. Too much to respond to, so I'll stick with what stuck out the most. ;)

Nicholas Rowe! Aww!! Someone else has seen YSH? Bless your heart! I love him in it (the movie itself is meh for me, but he's great), so much so that I've become a bit of a Rowe fan. He pops up in period pieces a lot (especially of late) and I can always tell even before I see his face because he towers over everyone else on set. (His latest two appearances -- a lawyer in the lovely Doctor Thorne miniseries, and as Winston Churchill's secretary in The Crown.)

Emma. I love, love, LOVE that version too. I think I watched it a hundred times when I was in my teens. I can still quote it from beginning to end, with enough caffeine in my system. Now and again Mom and I will side-eye one another and say, "Emmmmmaaa...." just like Knightley does at the archery range ("You WROTE her answer, didn't you!?"). Ahh, good times.

    1. When Rowe popped up playing Holmes in a movie during Mr. Holmes, I kind of flipped out quite loudly with my excitement. I was watching it with my mom, and had to pause the movie so I could explain how GENIUS that casting was.

I really want to see Doctor Thorne -- hoping my library picks it up.

This version of Emma is just 100% delicious. I quote it a lot too, especially any time we eat pork. "PORK, MOTHER!" But so many other places too. I made my husband find recipes for celery root because I'd always wanted to eat it after the whole bit in this movie, and of course whenever we have it, I have to say, "I love... I positively love... celery root."

And it's one of my favorite soundtracks too <3

  2. You've seen the 1983 Jane Eyre? How cool. We own that movie. And I love Jane and Mr. Rochester's portrayals in that film. So spot on. (Of course, I've never seen any other version so I have nothing to compare them to, but still...)

I like how you included so many different versions in your list of characters. I've seen all those Robin Hood movies. In fact, we own all of them. And Richard Todd is my favorite. :) Also Guy Williams as Zorro! Yes, ma'am! :D

Thanks for tagging me, Hamlette. I'm really behind on filling out tags, but I'll see what I can do. :)

    1. Miss March, yup! The 1983 is my favorite. I've seen 3 (4?) other adaptations, but it is still tops in my book.

Hooray for another Robin Hood fan! Richard Todd is such a sweet RH, isn't he? And yes, Guy Williams is a wonderful Zorro -- I've gotten my kids addicted to his show, and we have a big poster of him hanging in the hallway upstairs, lol.

      You're welcome!

    2. Finally got around to filling out this tag.
http://marchramblings.blogspot.com/2017/01/a-period-drama-tag.html Thanks again for tagging me. I had fun with it. :) (Oh and about that tag you tagged me with back in August. Sorry I never got around to doing that one. I had good intentions, but well...good intentions aren't always enough, isn't that right? ;))

Oh and yes! Richard Todd is a really sweet Robin Hood. I like him a lot in that role. You've got your kids addicted to Zorro? Haha. Well, it's a good show to be addicted to, I'd say. ;)

    3. Yay! I will check it out post-haste. And don't worry about not getting around to tags! It happens. I can't manage to do all the ones I get tagged with myself :-)

  3. This is the same text I posted in response to your comment on my blog, but just in case you didn't have a chance to see it.

"Interesting idea. I had to look up period drama to define the parameters. I think I can turn out a post that is both entertaining and educational. The "educational" part comes as a result of my utilizing what I learned, as I am wont to do in these cases. I expect I'll have something ready by Sunday."

    2. I actually did see your response from your blog, but as usual, Blogger refuses to email me your comments on my blog, and I just have to stumble on them. Your post was great fun!

  4. I love the dresses in White Christmas! Especially that greeny velvet one that Rosemary Clooney wears. Just being nosy, but how can you not like Sybil, even if you're not a fan of Downton? She's so lovely! haha

    1. Catherine, YES. Love those dresses. I actually got a dress in college that reminded me of the green one -- it was green velvet on top, and then a green skirt, but hey.

I have seen the first 4 eps of DA, and then one random one somewhere in the middle. The only characters I cared for much were Bates, Anna, and the Dowager.

  5. I love Helena Bonham-Carter as the fairy godmother in Cinderella. I can totally see you in a dress just like that :-)

Oh, by the way--DID YOU SEE THE NEW BEAUTY AND THE BEAST TRAILER. I AM DYING OVER HERE. (Seriously, it's beautiful.)

    1. Jessica, it would be a fun one to wear! Unless you wanted to sit down or had to use the bathroom -- then, not so much.

I haven't seen the new trailer yet, but I'm hoping it plays when I go see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them this weekend.

  7. This is a fun tag! I borrowed it for my blog. It brought back memories of movies I haven't seen in ages!

Jeremy Brett...I have to see him as Sherlock Holmes it would seem. My mother loved him in this role, too! I have only seen him as Freddy in My Fair Lady.

Timothy Dalton is a very handsome Rochester! If I'm not wrong he has acted as Heathcliff as well, right?

    1. Risa, that's great! I will have to go read your post.

It's hard to believe that the same guy who is so wonderful as Holmes was also funny Freddy. But it's true. I've also seen Brett in an excellent adaptation of Rebecca, which you can often find on YouTube.

Timothy Dalton did play Heathcliff at some point too, yes. I haven't seen that, though.

  8. Thanks for the tag! My post just went live actually. This was a fun post! :)

I haven't watched The Man From Snowy River for ages. I need to find a copy and watch it again.

Yay for Anne! Also, I really need to watch the newest Lone Ranger film. You've convinced me I need to see Armie in action. ;)

I'm so glad you love John and Margaret!! *happy sigh*

    1. Kara, great! I will go read it.

I don't know if you'd like The Lone Ranger movie. But I think you'd love Armie in Mirror Mirror, where he plays Snow White's handsome prince!

  9. I loved your answers and all the pictures. Robin Hood, Zorro, and the Lone Ranger... of course! Three of the best, and I always associate you with all three. I love Young Sherlock Holmes. Nearly listened to the music from it just the other day when I needed something not worn out, but couldn't break away from the Fantastic Beasts score. Hee.

I have posted my answers. Thanks for tagging me!

I need to rewatch Young Sherlock Holmes. Been much too long.

Off to read your post :-)

  10. Oh, it looks like a fun tag! Thanks for the invite and sorry for my slow response! Things have been super busy lately, but I’m about to make a comeback to the cyber world!
If I have the time I’ll see if I can post a late response! I may have to make it a little more western… :)

And if aforementioned time is present, I’m still hoping to be a part of your John Wayne Blogathon as well…we’ll see. I just haven’t picked a film yet!

    1. Annie, westernize it all you want ;-) Westerns are totally period dramas!

You've got about a week to come up with something yet for the blogathon, and I'll totally add you as a last-minute entry if you don't figure out what you want to do until it has already begun.

      Delete
    2. Thanks for letting me duck in at last minute! Would it be fine to do a post titled "The Never Seen "Katie Elder" ~ The Sons Of Katie Elder"
Not a film review, but a few thoughts about the character Katie Elder? If so add me to your list please!

      Delete
    3. Annie -- I think like a character sketch of the unseen Katie and how she influences people, etc, would work, as long as it's distinctly not a review, since someone is already reviewing the film.

Otherwise, I just found out that Eva isn't going to review "The Horse Soldiers" after all, so that one is up for grabs now...

      Delete
    4. It might be borderline review, so I've just played it safe and published it separate from the blogathon.

Thanks for telling me about The Horse Soldiers, I don't think I'll review that one as I've only seen it once and would have to refresh my memory first...
The weekend is pretty busy, but maybe I'll get a chance to squeeze in a review of a 30's B-western. Wayne made some fun ones back then. :)

And if I don't have time to participate, I'll settle down with a a steaming cup o' tea next week and delight in all the other entries--I'm excited about reading them!

Thanks for hosting such a fun blogathon!

    5. Ohhhh, a review of one of his B-westerns would be awesomely fun! I really get a huge kick out of those, and no one's writing about them at all. Plus, they're short and simple, so a review would probably be fast to whip up.
