I have seen numerous versions of “Jane Eyre” over the years; despite some literary license, the 1943 film remains, for me at least, the best screen adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s novel. The gothic atmosphere of the story is best captured by moody black-and-white photography; later colour productions always, in my opinion, “prettified” the tale too much.
