March/April Issue of "Femnista" is out

The latest issue of Femnista is out today :-)  In it, I've got a review of the movie One Night with the King (2006), which portrays the Biblical story of Esther.  You can read this issue right here on my blog, or online here, or download it as a PDF here.

As usual, there are lots of interesting articles besides mine ;-)  Call the Midwife and Risen, Moses and Joan of Arc, martyrs and saints -- lots and lots of great topics!

  1. I loved your One Night With the King article! The King himself sounds slightly annoying (haha), but Esther looks awesome. (As she should, of course.)

    1. Yeeeeeeeeeeeees, Xerxes as a bit... unpredictable, vain, selfish, etc. He worked very well for the story. Esther was quite cool, though.

    2. He sounds a leetle bit temperamental in the Bible story itself, though--so maybe it wasn't all made up.

I've always loved Esther, even when I was little. She's so brave.

    3. Yes, the Biblical account and historians like Herodotus portray him as very impetuous and changeable, not particularly a nice guy, so I think they were pretty accurate in his characterization. They probably made him a bit nicer than he actually was.

Esther is one of my heroines too -- in fact, we almost named our second daughter Esther.

  2. Your article is so interesting! I especially liked your points about Xerxes actually being historically accurate. I wonder if Esther really fell in love with him in real life. Obviously she does in the movie, but I really couldn't understand why! haha :)

    1. Thanks, Natalie! I doubt that Esther was in love with Xerxes in real life. Being queen was more about being a figurehead than anything else, and she might have had very little to do with him after their initial encounter and various state appearances. Which is why her coming into his presence uninvited was such a huge deal.

(And yeah, no idea why she sort of falls for him in the movie. Not my type, I guess.)

    2. That makes sense.

Hahaha, exactly. I can't imagine him being anyone's type...but to each their own, I guess. :P

  3. Call the Midwife is, as usual, beautiful. I'm watching its current season now and mygosh, it's quite possibly its best yet.

    1. Rissi, I'm going to have to try Call the Midwife one of these days. I hear and read such good things about it!

    2. It's so good though definitely a "grittier" (more realistic) drama than some of BBC's other offerings. Hope you enjoy it if and/or when you decide to try it. :)

    3. I delivered all 3 of my babies with nurse-midwives, so that makes me feel like I'd reeeeally dig this show. Maybe. We'll see!

Agree or disagree? That is the question...
